I am trying to speed up my blog and according to:http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/improve-the-speed-of-your-wordpress-site/, one thing that was suggested was to use the "WP-DBManager" plugin, which I installed already and did everything as per the tips given.

But on my own blog, there's a little red box that came up right at the top of my dashboard that says:

"Your backup folder MIGHT be visible to the public

To correct this issue, move the .htaccess file from wp-content/plugins/wp-dbmanager to /home/yxxxd/public_html/quaxxxxer.com/wp-content/backup-db"

The thing is when I used my ftp software and went into the wp-dbmanager folder, I can only see the htaccess.txt file and not the .htaccess file as per the red alert box.

Anyone has any experience with this that can help shed some light on this matter?

I use this plugin to optimize my database. Never had any issues.

Note from WP DB Manager plugin author:

I regret to say that I am NOT ABLE to provide support for my plugins anymore due to my full-time job commitment

If your issue related to the plugin, you might find specific help for that at the plugin forum where the plugin author should help you resolve the issue. In this case you might not get his help.

You can also remove tables from deleted plugins using this plugin.

And there's more you can do to clean up your database as well.

Note: Highly recommended you take a DB backup before using DB plugins.

Based on my own personal experience, i have found shared servers may not provide enough CPU resources once you add content, images, coding, plugins etc to your server space.
