I'm using the Gallery Pro theme, everything is the current version. Comments have disappeared from all three sites where I use this theme. Comments are enabled in the Genesis > Theme Settings, in Settings > Discussion, and also on individual posts. I also turned off every plugin to see if there was some sort of conflict, but that no effect. Any ideas why my comments are gone?

A long shot, but worth ruling it out if you have easy access to back-ups

Funky GrafixMay 28, 2018 at 7:55 pm #220321jenniferpinkleyParticipantI'm actually using this theme on three sites and I have made some major changes so no I can't go to a backup. I actually did a clean install on one site and no comments there either. I've also emailed the theme developer to ask for help but thought I'd check here too.
May 28, 2018 at 8:13 pm #220322Funky GrafixParticipantYes, I did read on your original post there are three instances of the same issue and is the reason I thought of the recent WP update as a potential cause (if all three sites are set to update automatically)
You haven't ruled this out with the clean install, unless you used the previous WordPress version and I can't think of any other reason why all three sites would have the same issue at the same time, unless perhaps a PHP change at the server or something similar?

Funky GrafixMay 29, 2018 at 5:50 am #220340jenniferpinkleyParticipantI see what you're saying now. I actually remembered I have the theme running on another site I haven't updated to the recent version and comments work there so it probably is a WordPress problem. I also activated the Twenty Sixteen theme to see what happened and comments don't work on that either. I guess I'll try downgrading. I found this tutorial, is this process safe to try? http://dominiquej.com/how-to-downgrade-wordpress-to-previous-version/
Also what is the best way to report WordPress bugs? This is a pretty big one. Thanks for your help.
May 29, 2018 at 6:31 am #220343Funky GrafixParticipantYes, the issue does look to be WordPress update connected, but it isn't a bug necessarily, since there would have been widespread complaints. I think the update may have impacted on one of your plug-ins and you can understand why, if you read the list of changes during this recent update - here:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Version_4.9.6You might want to read through all of this and be sure before reporting a bug, but, should you decide to do so, it can be submitted here:
Separately, unless you have a robust back-up procedure in place, I wouldn't advise downgrading WP to the earlier revision. I have tried this in the past and it can make a complete mess of the database.
Ideally, you ought to have two or three independent back-ups in place for situations just like this (or worse)FG
Funky GrafixMay 29, 2018 at 9:26 am #220345jenniferpinkleyParticipantYeah I guess going back a version is not a good idea. I did an experiment with a site I'm not longer using, deleted everything and reinstalled WordPress and my theme. Didn't install any plugins and the comments worked so it must be a plug-in. The problem is I deactivated every plug-in and comments still aren't working so something evidently got messed up in the database. Is there any way to reset the plugin section of the database without deleting my content and theme customization?
May 29, 2018 at 10:38 am #220348Funky GrafixParticipantI would try your luck and get in contact with your hosting company as a start, since they might just have a back-up of your files and database! The more reputable firms back-up the whole server daily, even though they don't advertise this. Be prepared to have to pay a reasonable fee though if this is the case.
There is no manual way of resetting any section of a database as far as I'm aware, but you could try deleting all of the plug-ins (instead of merely de-activation) and re-installing from scratch.
If you have access to PHP My Admin via your server, you can manually delete the associated plug-in tables from there, but be warned you will also lose their settings when you re-install
Finally, It might be worth going back a couple of revisions on the server PHP version!
Ver7.2.6 was released on 24/05/ and could be a part of the problem with your plug-ins, causing the WordPress update theory to be just a red herring!FG
