Multisite and Genesis

So it looks like there are some things that I need to know before rolling out multisite in Genesis. Is there a recent tutorial of:

1. How to run multisite
2. What things I need to know? ie. can each site have a distinct email etc...

Any tips?

Hey thanks for the link. Looks like a lot of info on those videos.

btw, I was able to use domain mapping and got multisite to run unique domains.

Now, I am considering if I want to deal with:

1. Updating multiple WP installs
2. Use multisite but live with the pain of not being able to easily move domains to another WP install

Anyone else have feedback or real world experience on this?

You CAN map multisite instances to discrete external domains.

Yup @electricbrik, that was the domain mapping plugin that I used to create the test multisite. I am liking multisite a lot but not sure I wan tot host mant clients on 1 install of this. I can only imagine if a client even wants to leave or roll back due to corruption or hack, it would not be easy.

Have a look at the "Backwpup" plugin. You can can schedule backups of individual site SQL and upload folder files, locally and to Amazon S3. Free version works a treat!

Thanks sokratesagogo! I tried backing up and restoring an entire site. It took a few minutes to dig around to figure out how to restore the database. Had to use phpmyadmin. Wonder why they got rid of this tool inside the plugin.
I just deleted my test multisite so I cannot see the database table structure. I assume multisite would set a unique prefix for every new account created? And this is how you would select which table to backup? I wonder if using phpmyadmin to rebuild the database and then move the filesystem into public_html is all that it takes to move a multisite "site" to it's own WP install?

Each site will have it's own site_id. With reference to domain mapping tool walkthrough on Otto's page you can find the site ID from Super Admin->Sites

Install the Backwpup plugin and network active. From the network menu of the main site you will see a new menu item for BackWpup. As part of the add a new job dialogue, you will see a DBBackup tab. Select this and you will see all the tables listed. You will see that the tables are grouped with a site ID.

Once you have made a SQL back using BackupWP, you could then import this into a new MySQL database, and setup the new WordPress site to simply look for tables with the appropriate prefix e.g. prefixfrom oldsite_sitenumberhere.

Of course you could run a SQL command across the import to change the prefix to whatever you wanted, then attache the WordPress 🙂

@Mealtog: If you're looking at how to best manage, maintain, and back up various WP installs with the least amount of effort, go with ManageWP. Changed my old agency's whole world.
