I saw an older reply to this question but not sure what it means.
I starting working on a Magazine Pro 3.3.0 site - exactly like another one I've built, but this one is missing Home Top, Home Middle, and Home Bottom widget areas.
Gutenberg is installed if that means anything.
How do I get back those Widget areas? Thanks.
Use an old version of the theme. New theme versions use blocks instead of widget areas.
I thought I was using an older version 3.3.0 which works fine on my first site. Same theme 3.3.0 on the second site but the widget areas are missing.
I'm totally confused, can blocks contain widgets?
Okay, so just to cut to the chase on this issue, StudioPress lists a "News Pro 3.3.0" theme which appears to be the old Magazine Pro 3.3.0 before they omitted all the widget areas on the home page.
So if you're having this problem just install News Pro 3.3.0. You'll have to redefine a lot of stuff but at least you'll have all the working widget area back again.
@beggers you said:

You mentioned News Pro and Magazine Pro. They are two completely different themes.
Magazine Pro's most recent version is "block based home page". The home page widgets were removed.
News Pro has "not" been updated to blocks. It's still "widget based."

Yes, I understand that. That's why I switched to News Pro so I could have widget areas again. The thing is, News Pro is virtually identical to Magazine Pro 3.3.0 except is still uses widgets - In fact, I think News Pro is just the old Magazine Pro renamed.
It's sad to see how Studiopress changed their famous Magazine Pro to all blocks. Gutenberg is consistently panned by critics and this change seemed to be solely to force people to use blocks. I can tolerate Gutenberg but having to build with only blocks is not for me.
