A couple of weeks ago we bought the Genesis Framework with Altitude Pro theme. This is our first experience with WordPress. We're trying to move away from our previous platform (Squarespace).

Having been through the setup guide for the theme, importing demo content, etc. We are still struggling with even the most basic stuff. Things like changing the background color require use to search through the css file - change - test - fail - repeat - multiple times just to get the color of a section changed from black to white.
We manage to change the background color - but then we modify the "accent color'' setting in Customize and it ends up changing the background also.
Been trying to figure out how to change the height of a section (the front-page-1, -2, -3 etc sections) and have found this almost impossible. Short of trying to change every CSS line that seems relevant.

Is it supposed to be this hard?

Is there a basic guide that spells out some of these things?

We're not web desing or css experts, any advice?

You will need to learn the basics of CSS, how to use a Web developer tool like Firebug or Chromes inspector to find CSS rules and modify them in the browser before editing the CSS in the style sheet.

Otherwise, there are plugins which include settings to change the basic styling.

You can post a question relating to one specific modification here on the forums and you'll more than likely be given the modified CSS rule or the line number and instructions on what CSS needs editing by a volunteer.

There are a number of Genesis plugins you might find useful. I'd suggest starting by taking a look at Design Palette Pro. Good luck, Genesis is a great platform.
