So, let me explain. Our old web host was nice enough to create a script for us to SSH in and run 1 command and it will take back ups and upgrade WP all in one swoop. This had to be done as root login via SSH. I think they may have made changes to ownership of various files and folders inside WP and sometimes, plugins would throw and error saying this and that could not be deleted or created.

I want to move to a new install of WP and was wondering what is the best way to do this. Anyone have tips for me so I can stick with using WP to do all updates now instead of through the original script?

    1. Install fresh WP
    2. Use import / export feature in tools section to transfer contents from old wp to new wp
    3. Transfer images via ftp

This is the most basic way or use plugin - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-plugins-for-easily-migrating-a-wordpress-site-tried-tested/

    Hi Davinder, this sounds good:

    1. Install fresh WP - ok i can do that
    2. Use import / export feature in tools section to transfer contents from old wp to new wp - this only takes database content and not images correct?
    3. Transfer images via ftp - see #2

    Is that right?

Yes, you are correct. Step 2 only transfer text content, tags, category assigned. For images, manually transfer contents of wp-uploads folder to new location via ftp. Also check this plugin http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-move/

Interesting plugin Davinder. It can even be used to roll back WP to an earlier point like an image backup? Nice. Will have to test this so thanks very much!

On a side note, I know you are an expert in this area. Do you think I should use this plugin to do this? http://www.studiopress.community/topic/tips-for-developing-in-a-subfolder-before-launching/

Or continue to do what I have document in that thread?

I prefer the manual way, as you are in control of everything. And know what has been done and what is left. Plugin may leave broken ends (Note: I haven't used the above mentioned plugin, so use discretion).

When you say manual, would the way I described work well?

ok great. Glad to know I can always use that method to move sites around. I will go ahead and use that method to develop a new WP site in a sub folder and only move it to public_html once WP is fully ready. The domain has static info on it at the moment so I don't want to disrupt current traffic visiting the website. Thanks for confirming I can do that to move sites around. Thanks!

If only using WordPress just for developing new website design and content - then use it in offline mode using localhost method. Just install free software WAMP server and you can start designing wordpress website on PC itself (much faster and easier method). Once done with designing just transfer stuff to existing wordpress online on domain.

I have tried this method before using XAMPP but in this set up, that is not possible as we need the writers to be able to log in remotely to enter all content.

I am now ready to try a re-install of WP and then migrating content back to it. If I use the Tool >> Export function + manually copying the images back to the upload folder, would the widgets and customized CSS + plugins still be there? Or do these need to be re-set up again?

I am trying to reinstall WP not using SSH this time.

I recently used http://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/ to migrate 4 WP installs to new hosts. Worked pretty smooth.
