I have installed and configured the Genesis Slider, put it into the widget as the theme instructions state but my photo is being cutoff, the photo size is definitely large enough to fill that space, any ideas why i have all of this space? Also do i put my image in the featured image area or add it as an image into the editor?

You might want to check the slider settings.

Crop your image first so it matches the size you set in the slider and then add it as a featured image on your single post edit screen.
