Leaning towards using Magazine Pro as a theme.

I hear Magazine Pro has recently been updated. Using blocks instead of widgets. Don't really know the difference? is one easier to use than the other for a beginner?

Its personal preference. You can use blocks or install the classic editor and use the older version of the theme with widget areas.

Vince, don't do it! When I found out the new Magazine Pro was converted to all blocks I almost sat down and cried.

One of the things that made WordPress so successful and powerful over the years was the availability of hundreds of thousands of cool widgets such as Content Views which allow you to make all kinds of interesting home page designs.

Now, instead of being able to choose from all these amazing widgets you're stuck using a relatively small number of Blocks that don't come close to doing all the cool stuff. And it's hard to figure out the purpose of the individual blocks.

I've always considered Magazine Pro to be Studiopress' flagship product. It's a masterpiece of design. But then the company dropped Gutenberg on us and frankly it has been widely criticized. My guess is that Studiopress was so determined to get Gutenberg (and blocks) widely accepted that they converted their great Magazine Pro theme to all blocks. A huge marketing mistake.

I have forced myself to get used to Gutenberg, hoping that they will eventually fix all its bugs and quirks. But I am never giving up on widgets.

My advice to you is to ask Studiopress to send you version 3.3.0 of Magazine Pro which is the version released right before the block conversion. You can build just about anything you want with this version and widgets.

    Good luck.

I switched to Magazine Pro about a week ago. At first, I thought I wouldn't like it, but I do like the look of the blocks. I use both blocks and widgets, which is also possible (plugin required). While I am still working out the kinks from switching over and styling of it, I am happy I made the switch. The theme I was using hadn't been updated in over 2 years.

I guess it is all just a matter of personal preference.

You can add back as many widget areas as you want on any theme regardless of blocks, you can add them and target the home page or with multiple conditions.
