    I'm using A Beautiful Theme, and I replaced the header text with a header image/logo. This made the header banner image (the "background" image) move downwards a few centimeters (you can look at the demo and compare, you'll see what I mean).

    I can see that part of the problem is that the header image is taking up a lot of space (there's a big white area underneath the text) but this is because the header is a fixed/pre-determined size.

    Is there a way to fix this?

    First check the size of your logo image height. Update that height value in following code in style.css file

    .header-image .site-title a {
    	float: left;
    	min-height: 120px;
    	width: 100%;
    }

    Also, you can configure logo dimensions in custom header code in functions.php file - if your theme support custom header. If you make changes in functions.php file - remember to re-upload logo image.

    Thank you, Davinder. I already tried this, and changed min-height to 88px (same size as logo). But I encounter a problem when I try to upload the correctly sized image in the wordpress admin/appearance/header area. When I choose a file to upload and it's not 320x120px, WP wants me to crop the photo.

    So I guess the solution would be either to somehow skip this cropping step (which as far as I can see is impossible), or to manually type in the code of the header image somehow?

    Look for logo image code in functions.php file and set width and height dimensions as 320 and 120 respectively to avoid cropping.
