My site had a bug and my host had to revert to a backup. In the process, all customizations in my Genesis Magazine Pro theme were wiped out. It took me weeks to figure out all the various customizations I'd lost and reconfigure theme.

Is there any easy way to save customizations in the event something like this happens?

I would also like to know if there is a way to do this. In the meantime, I just try to backup my mySQL database and all the site files every day. That way I can revert to a backup if I screw up some settings. I made a couple of batch files to do this and I'll also run them just before I do any major changes.

I read that you can export your theme settings in a file. So if that includes your customizations (not sure it does), then you should be able to import it back into your installation if you have to revert to a backup.

It depends on how you've customized your theme. Did you add your customizations in the Customizer, add custom code to the Additional CSS box? Or did you add them directly to a stylesheet, functions.php file. I have various ways of backing up. So knowing how you customized your theme would help me share what I do.

I had settings for the home page which offered excerpts rather than full posts. In the reversion the settings reverted to full post display.

I also had Google Adsense code in the header script which somehow got erased.

I also had Hebrew characters in my blog title which somehow didn't render properly after the reversion.

I would say, use All in One Migration and make a complete backup of the website. Get the free copy of Desktop Server (free version) and keep a working copy of your website on your computer. That way you have copies of everything and not just in chunks of code here and there. There are other migration plugins but I love that one and it works well for me.

*Added:* Or if your hosting plan allows it, create a staging area of the site and you'll have that as copy to grab code from as well.
