I haven't chosen a host yet but would like to start building a farmers' market website with Genesis and a StudioPress theme. Can I do this on my PC desktop?

    Hi Ibohen

Yes. I'm a mac user and use MAMP. You could use WAMP for PC as your localhost testing server http://www.wampserver.com/en/ . WAMP stands for Window, Apache, MySQL and PHP. You can basically build your new site locally using WAMP then when you are ready, move it across to a live host. What I love about MAMP/WAMP is it comes shipped with PHPMyAdmin for an easy way of building your database (I'm sure there are other packages doing the same things too!). I build all my sites locally as that way even after the site has gone live, I still have a local copy I can use to test stuff out if I need to.

    Good luck.

I see that WAMPSERVER offers 32 and 64 bit versions. Which would you recommend and why?

I'm new at this. Are there instructions on how to start building a site with Genesis / StudioPress child theme?

Desktop Server is what I use. It's free up to three sites. It's easy to install. Moving your site to a hosted environment using Desktop Server requires a purchase of the premium service, unless you are familiar with mySql and phpMyAdmin.

Lynda.com and https://teamtreehouse.com/ have courses on working with WordPress and Genesis. There is site https://knowthecode.io/technologies/genesis which is very good. There are also other tutorials in the wild, I recommend http://nutsandboltsmedia.com/ and http://billerickson.net/

    These are skills you need:

    Theme Customization Basic Skills

Many people usually find a child theme that most closely matches the structure of the site they intend to build and use that as a jumping off point. Google for Genesis Child themes, there are many out there.

Install WordPress locally using desktop server/serverpress

You can then migrate your theme to a live server.

However, its hard to provide CSS support for people developing locally.
