If you are redesigning an existing site or blog, do you usually make the changes live or get everything set up on a test site and then transfer it over? If you do have a test site, how do you transfer it over? Do you just install the parent and child theme, and then cut and paste your modified version of the child theme's php and css? Or just upload your modified version of the child theme files to the server? Also, when installing a new child theme, do sidebar widgets and menus typically go away?

Install WordPress locally using instantwp for Windows or MAMP for Mac.

Install the theme and import the content if needed.

Then upload the theme after you have completed all the custom coding.

Kind of on this same question... I just paid Hostgator a whole $37 to basically copy my site to a new url and update the permalinks. I'm very happy with that, but now how do I make ALL of my URL's on the old site point or redirect to the corresponding url on the new site?

HG normally offer a free migration service.

Ask HG to do that as well.

Otherwise you'll need to place redirects in your .htaccess file manually.

Here's some .htaccess file tricks and a guide to.htaccess

I recently bought a network storage device. This has as one of the packages within the firmware the ability to install wordpress and the sql package.

Handy solution which you can connect to the internet and test the loading times via friends checking it on various platforms.
