I'm trying to help someone with some tweaks to her site. But I'm getting "critical error" on Filezilla, (FTPtest.net says "login refused by server"). And in the file manager of her C-Panel, the download button is disabled.

I could edit her CSS file in the browser, but I am really not comfortable making any edits (especially in such a silly browser editor) without first downloading backups for her.

Am I missing something? I've never had either of these issues before. What should I do next?

You should probably contact her host regarding your inability to access her files. I just recently had that issue with ATT Hosting for a client. What hosting company is it?

I'll do that, thanks, Anita. She is with merchantmoms.com.

If she has any type of Managed WordPress hosting, you could also have other issues down the road.

Yay! 😉 This was supposed to be simple...so far it's only 5 CSS changes and possibly a couple lines of PHP.

I emailed the host first thing this morning, but haven't heard anything yet.
