I'm preparing to set up a new site and could use some input on choosing the best theme.
The new site will be targeted to reflective personality types (thinkers vs. doers). The content will be primarily blog posts and articles, but I will make use of a Services category to promote the personality assessments I offer. Within the next year, I hope to have a book to promote on there as well.
I've narrowed my selection down to two: Lifestyle or Modern Portfolio. The "plusses" for the Lifestyle theme are the color (blue, which I want to incorporate in the design), and the variety of text areas. I also like the ad area on the sidebar (good chance I'd make use of that). The biggest "plus" for the Modern Portfolio is the clean, more artsy design. I believe most of my site visitors will have a creative bent, or creative interests, so I'm thinking this design might be more appealing. It looks like the Portfolio and Recently From the Blog sections will work well for both blog posts and articles, and this theme does offer good options for presenting services.
My only concern with Modern Portfolio is whether the theme is flexible enough for me to adjust for my needs. Can any of you tell me how flexible the Home page is? Can the various areas -- Welcome, Portfolio, Services, Blog, Footer -- be moved (or removed) pretty easily? I'm using Outreach on my current site, and found it very easy to work with. I'm hoping the same is true for this one.
Any input would be appreciated.
http://www.thedianekrause.comJuly 15, 2013 at 10:53 am #50802AnitaCKeymasterThere are going to me some newer themes coming out with the release of Genesis 2.0 soon. You might want to hold out and see what the new ones look like. As for Modern Portfolio, do you want to move the areas around - a different order or remove some all together. You'd have to modify the code to do that. I am using it for a client. One drawback is that Modern Portfolio has had some browser issues with Internet Explorer 8 and previous versions - for visitors, that is. Several people using this theme had visitors report that the theme was broken in older browsers and there wasn't a really great CSS way to actually fix it. Another designer provided what fixed it for her and said it may or not work for my client. I haven't tried it yet. No one can predict what browser a visitor is viewing your website in - but I would want to get a theme that didn't have issues reported or at least find a developer who could target that issue and resolve it just for your needs.
The other factor is responsiveness. Lifestyle has been a very popular theme, but it isn't responsive, while MP is. You should think about that as well in your decision-making process.
