MemberHi,
Legacy/appfinite theme Header loads quickly on my iPhone, but the last item to appear is the site title which appears over 3 secs later. A simple Text Header w/right widget. Tag line, widget and background load fast but there's the wait for the site Title. Not everybody will wait.
Using Quick Cache. Pingdom Test results show the Header taking long time to load but the site speed varies a lot depending on the weather I guess.
Any ideas I might check out? Thanx.

ParticipantHi,
I don't see your site per se, so there could be many factors there, such as plugins, feeds from wherever, etc. But I did have a look at that theme's demo, and like many themes, it uses a Google font as the heading, so that's a possible small bottleneck that may be noticeable if the call to Google is slow at that moment. If it's persistent, you could try a regular "websafe" font there like Arial or what-have-you and see if you speed up at all (although that may look more boring).Beyond that, trying a cache is good. And hosting can be a factor, too.
Good luck,
Dave

MemberMornin' Dave,
Well another grey-n-rainy day in Tokyo, but your response brightened things up a bit. I never thought of the font as a potential issue, but it's worth checking out. The name of the font is Oswald which I didn't like at first, but grew to like it because the Caps are a bit taller then the usual arial, etc. That said, I did elect to set the rest of the site in arial.
I'm new at website design and as I'm targeting an international market, read that Asia. I thought that a generic font would most likely be readable on most computers. Well except for the nav bar and widget titles, all is arial.
I didn't post the site url as I've learned one lesson here: too much of a good thing is 'too much'. In some past posts I've provided a lot of info so the person that might answer my ??'s would see it as I see it... "it" being the problem. In most cases there's never a response and so brevity wins.
I'm still populating the Pages with info, in fact the most important Page is not yet on the nav bar, but please take a look: tomjdolan.com
My goal is to project friendly, trustworthy, reliable, capable... kinda like the Boy Scouts without the Campfire Marshmallows. Any feedback is well appreciated if you're moved to make a comment(s).
Thanx Dave,
Tom

KeymasterHi Tom, what browser are you using? I just visited the site using Firefox and it loaded quickly. By the way, the site is really coming along nicely.

MemberHi anitac,
Nice to hear from you again. I use Safari as my usual browser, mostly out of habit. I did download both FireFox & Chrome to test the appearance and functionality of my choices. Frankly, I don't see an issue with any of the 3 browsers. The slow-2-load issue is on my iPhone, and again it's only with the site Header Title, what I believe is the H1 title.
The site loads and opens pretty quickly. Every thing is there but not the Title text. Yesterday I used my studio stopwatch and according to it, the Title text takes over 3 seconds to arrive on site. I'd like to speed it up if possible. I thought about asking my web host to check it out. They have been pretty responsive but I have one unsolved issue with them and will probably relocate the site next January. Also,
the response from Dave suggested the time might be related to pulling the google font...I know zero about that possibility but it's ez to confirm which I'll do later today. So, once again,
Thanx for your comments and interest in my journey,
Tom

ParticipantHi Tom, (Hi, Anita!)
Yes, the site looks great, and for a Japanese guy, you have super command of U.S. idiomatic expressions. 😉 Yeah, you'll sell stuff - very nice, confidence inspiring look.Oswald was the font offered on a previous Genesis Sample child theme, so we Genesisists know it well. I see you've got some security goodies in there, too, excellent.
It's still going very fast for me. And I use Quick Cache a lot. I just ran a speed test on your site, and it came out great except for the cache, but the stuff that didn't really cache was the stuff coming from TED, and I wouldn't expect that to cache since it's offsite, and it may not be able to cache the Google font stuff, I reckon.
If it were the Google font, one could serve a different font at iPhone size, that would be a way to test it pretty easily. You'd still have a tiny performance hit from just loading the Google font in CSS, but probably negligible. Maybe an iPhone coding expert would chime in.
All in all, IMO not too much to worry about, I think, and it looks better than many sites I run into.
Cheers, Dave
