Back when Google Authorship started, one HAD to have a link to your G+ profile with a rel=author in the author bio. My question is, now, with Genesis' authorship connectivity, is it necessary to have a link to the author's Google+ profile in the bio? Or is it enough to connect to the author's G+ profile via the user setting's panel on WordPress/Genesis?

The reason I ask this is because I have writers that have G+ profiles for authorship validation, but don't really use their profiles. So the profiles look dead. I'd like authorship to work for them, but I'd rather not link out to a "dead" G+ profile that is never really used.

So, will authorship still work with just the Genesis G+ profile link and no link in the bio?

You don't have to link out in the bio per se, you could add the Google+ url in the profile settings.
