    I've been creating a lot of custom templates lately, and I'm still kind of reaching around in the dark as to how everything works with the most basic template. Here's an example of something I'm currently using:

    /**
    * Template Name: Home Page
    * Description: Used for custom home page design for example.com
    */

    //* Force full width content
    add_filter( 'genesis_pre_get_option_site_layout', '__genesis_return_full_width_content' );

    //* Remove Post Info
    remove_action( 'genesis_entry_header', 'genesis_post_info', 12 );
    remove_action( 'genesis_entry_header', 'genesis_do_post_title');

    //* Remove Post Meta
    remove_action( 'genesis_entry_footer', 'genesis_entry_footer_markup_open', 5 );
    remove_action( 'genesis_entry_footer', 'genesis_entry_footer_markup_close', 15 );
    remove_action( 'genesis_entry_footer', 'genesis_post_meta' );

    add_action( 'genesis_entry_content', 'custom_do_page_content', 9 );

    function custom_do_page_content() {
    //page content here
    }

    genesis();

    So if I understand correctly, simply calling the "genesis" function at the end of the template is including a bunch of markup, but what that is I don't know. I'm removing the loop, post meta, etc, but I don't know how many things there are to remove, and what I would actually want to remove. I'm simply creating a page template from scratch, and want to follow what's going on, so I can have full control of the css and layout. I noticed that .entry is applied to my current setup, which adds some basic padding / margin, but that came as a surprise, because I didn't add it myself, I believe it's just part of the genesis function, or being contained within a hook.

    That being said, can someone explain what exactly should or shouldn't be removed, what's included, and how to create a truly empty page template if desired, while still utilizing anything genesis does, if required?

    Try this http://wpsites.net/wordpress-themes/the-genesis-function/

    1. You only need a template header

    //* Template Name: Custom Template

    2. and the Genesis function

    genesis();

    Thanks, that clears things up.
