Since this is an official plugin by StudioPress, this issue with this plugin:
When I add a new application on Twitter, fill in all the necessary info, read/write permission and get the keys and access tokens, I still get this error message back from the plugin:
Twitter Exception Message: error setting certificate verify locations
Thus, no tweets are shown in the widget. What's going wrong here?

The error message I get is in the backend by the way, after filling in all the keys and tokens.
Try doing this - sometimes when you set up the Twitter widgets (Genesis and other developer plugins), if you haven't tweeted in a couple of days - the plugin won't pick it up. Looking at the Twitter button at the top which leads to here - https://twitter.com/kwartiermakenmb, there haven't been any tweets since September 6. Try sending out a tweet and then seeing if it shows up. If you still get the error on the back end, please provide a screen shot of the Twitter set up.

Also - look at screenshot #1. I see the website as http://www.kwartiermaken-mb.nl/wordpress/ but the return URL as http://www.kwartiermaken-mb.nl. I think these should be equal.

Yeah, I know about those url's being different, but they have been the same for a while and that didn't make any difference. Also, I'm having the same issue with another site, different server, same hosting agency.
I can ofcourse use another plugin or the one from Twitter, but because I bought Genesis, I'd like to use as much of it as I can 😉
Looks like people are posting on the Plugin Support page - http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/genesis-latest-tweets. Try posting there. This is the community forum and not the official support for the plugin. I think maybe post there and also put in a support ticket.

After experiencing problems with Genesis Latest Tweets, I gave up and started using Twitter's own Embedded Timelines in a Text widget.
Yeah, I already did with one site. I also tried another twitter plugin that gave me no problems, just this one.
This is the one I used when I couldn't get the Genesis one to work for a client - http://wordpress.org/plugins/latest-tweets-widget/.
