Ok, I am at a total loss as to how to fix this. The Genesis 1.9.1 update screwed up the (News theme) homepage on my site.

    http://i-cant-sleep.org

There is a lone post hanging out at the top of the home page I had set up, above the tabbed navigation. That needs to go.

And, when I click on 'home' or even bring up my site online, the URL is not http://i-cant-sleep. It becomes:

    http://i-cant-sleep.org/?doing_wp_cron=1358166583.2245490550994873046875

Any advice on how to correct all of this- or, better yet, anyone available for hire on a sporadic basis to fix things like this?

    Thanks.

It's not likely that Genesis 1.9.1 screwed up your website. Did you upgrade WP or any plugins recently? Did you add or remove any plugins?

The parameter ?doing_wp_cron attached to your URL is typically caused by having ALTERNATE_WP_CRON defined in your wp-config.php file. This is sometimes added by plugins that aren't working with cron on your host. Cron is an automated task scheduler. You can try removing or commenting out the alternate cron line, but that is probably going to break 1 of your plugins. You'd need to know which plugin put it there to track it down. Genesis wouldn't have edited your wp-config.php, so the issue of the parameter after your URL wasn't caused by Genesis directly.

For more background on my comment of getting cron to work with your host, see Otto's comment here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/scheduled-posts-still-not-working-in-282?replies=13#post-1175405.

That post is now several years old, but the issue hasn't changed in all those years. It's not Genesis 1.9.1 at issue; it's something in your plugin mix and server configuration, at least with respect to to the ?doing_wp_cron issue.

Thanks, Bill Murray, for your response. You are right in that there are actually two things going on and that the cron issue may not have anything to do with the Genesis update.

But I do believe the Genesis update threw my home page off-kilter because, as soon as I updated the Genesis theme, the homepage went askew.

Can you be more specific about what you mean by "askew"? Can you describe the before & after? Are you loading any stylesheets that might impact your home page other than your primary child theme stylesheet?

Child themes are largely styling, so there's limited opportunity for Genesis 1.9.1 to break a home page. Our demo of the same child theme that you're using was not impacted by the upgrade to 1.9.1, so there's something about your setup that brought the change. If you can better describe what changed, we might be able to pin that down and fix it.

Thanks, Bill, for your patience with me on this.

Before I loaded the Genesis update, my homepage looked like the News theme demo homepage.  After the update, a single post (the post seen is 'What a Sleep Clinic Can Do for You') appeared above the featured tabs widget.

But, I was able to correct it just now- the teaser boxes setting on the theme settings page had homepage teasers enabled. I changed that back to blog page and the homepage reverted to what I had previous to the update.

So, what made the teaser boxes settings change? I know I didn't do that because I had a devil of a time getting my homepage to look like the demo page in the first place and I sure as heck did not tamper with any settings I had set up!

    A fluke? Who knows.

    Thanks, Bill!

Just to clarify, there are no teaser box settings for the News theme by default. That was probably coming from a plugin. It could have been a plugin that was messing up your site, not the 1.9 upgrade or the child theme itself. Since you didn't change teaser box settings, you might want to track down which plugin put that there and get in touch with support for that plugin. If that's a plugin from the WP repo, that would be the Support link on the plugin's page in the repo.

If your plugin is Genesis Post Teasers, the forum would be http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/genesis-post-teasers, and you'll see there are other reports of the plugin not working properly after a Genesis 1.9.1 upgrade.

Bill, you are right. It was the Genesis Post Teasers plug-in.

Jeez, themes, plug-ins, updates- it is all so complicated at times!

Thanks, again, for your help. I learned a lot!
