I need to make a gallery that allows the user to select a material and a color and the gallery will display all images that match the criteria. Sort of like this http://beautifulgranite.com/natural-stone.html but in addition to picking a color there would be a drop down or another method to select the type of material.

You need a filterable gallery. I have seen 1 plugin but I don't know if it works or not, that was before 3.5. Otherwise you need to add jquery like isotope. There was a tutorial by Sozo on how he added it to his site but I can't find it now.
