I'm trying to incorporate this into my site (http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/how-to-display-featured-posts-with-thumbnails-in-wordpress/) but I'm having trouble. I've pasted the code into the functions.php file but i cannot work out where I paste the code into the template or how I do that. And I don't understand how I can make it so this only shows up under the opening text on my homepage, not every page.

Any help is greatly appreciated or if anyone knows a plugin that is easier than this..

I think it would be easier to just create a new widget area for your home page, and then add the Genesis Featured Posts widget to it.
