    Hi all,

    I am using the Fabric8ted theme but was not aware that there was no sidebar on the homepage until after i switched. I am a part of BlogHer Publishing Network and required to place an ad on my front page above the fold. With this theme there is no place to do that, given the ad sizes I am allowed. I used to have my ad in the sidebar. Can anyone help me add a sidebar to the homepage?

    I am also looking for code to add an RSS subscribe icon to the social networking icons in the header.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Mary

    Here is the information on the URL for the RSS link.  Are you simply wanting to make another link like you have for the other networks?  You'd add one of these.

    As far as the sidebar on the homepage, that'll be a challenge and allow you to keep the look you currently have.  Not sure what the ads are, do you need anything in the sidebar other than the ad?

    Thanks weslinda. We got the RSS subscribe icon worked out but still no help on creating a sidebar for the front page.  I have also thought about trying to move the call to action space up to just below the slider and putting my ad there but have no idea how to do that either. If you have any thoughts I'll gladly hear them.

    Anyone else too!

    Mary - in your home.php file, move the code for the CTA from below "Home - Top" to above it (so that it's between the Slider and the Home - Top

    	  	genesis_widget_area( 'home-cta', array(
    			'before' => '<div class="home-cta widget-area">',
    		) );

    		genesis_widget_area( 'home-top', array(
    			'before' => '<div class="home-top widget-area">',
    		) );

    I just tested it on my test site, and it worked, but as it's PHP you're playing with, I recommend keeping a clean copy of your home.php file on hand if you need to re-load it to your hosting site 🙂

    That worked! Thank You! Now I just have to convince BlogHer to allow me to place a horizontal ad in that space vs a block ad in the nonexistent sidebar.

    I may be seeking you out again if this doesn't fly.

    Mary - adding the sidebar back in is pretty straightforward (I tested that, too!), but as @weslinda said, you may need to make other tweaks to have it look as pretty as the theme was intended without the sidebar.

    Thanks Susan. I realize it won't look as nice and I am hoping BlogHer will approve the horizontal ad so I can keep the front page as it is, without a sidebar. If they do not agree then I will be back bugging you for the code to add a sidebar.

    You have been a lifesaver. At least they will be able to see now where I am proposing placing the ad.

    If I may annoy you again, can you look at one of my pages with the sidebar? How can I get that text block with the ad in it to not run off the right edge?  I placed a text block in the sidebar then pasted the ad code into it.

    Any help will be appreciated!

    Mary - The sidebar widget area has some padding that you could probably adjust:

    Look for this:

    .sidebar .widget {
    	margin: 0;
    	padding: 30px 40px;
    }

    Play around with that to get the look you want.

    Good information Susan. I think in looking at how the front page looks with that call to action with the ad I don't like it. Plus, it isn't large enough to contain the extra verbage that accompanies the ad.

    I think going to a front page with a sidebar is the best I can do. Could you help me with that or do it for me for a fee? I am somewhat challenged when it comes to coding.

    Let me know.

    Gratefully,

    Mary - sorry - I was out, so didn't see this until now.

    To add the sidebar back in, remove this code from your Home.php:

    add_filter( 'genesis_pre_get_option_site_layout', '__genesis_return_full_width_content' );

    Ok that worked but I am definitely going to have to do some tweaking with the other elements. Hopefully I can get it looking right again.

    THANKS!
