I need to make coloured bars above the headings for the featured widgets on the home page, as is shown here in this mockup image:

Customer mockup showing 3 coloured horizontal bars above widgets on the home page

I would really appreciate help with this as I have no idea how to go about it

The whole site will be using this visual effect on nearly every page - as they want to use the same 3-bar colours effect also above pages with columns ...which is pretty nearly every page they have on every tier. Like this:

Page with 3 columns and coloured bars above them

........And sometimes they will be 3 equal columns and sometimes 2 columns of 1/3 and 2/3rds. eg.

Page with only 2 columns of text but the 3 coloured bars above

    Many thanks for your time.

I'd take a look at the CSS code on that site using Firebug and use that.

You could also try the code used on the balance theme however it uses an image which is the same for each widget. Not sure how to make them different.

Ok in that case i would use the code from an existing theme which displays lines between widgets and excerpts. The Balance them is one example where you can take the code from the style sheet or use Firebug to inspect the element and change t5he background color.

You could simply use a background color rather than colored image.

Thanks for the ideas. It's a big jump from what the Balance theme has to what I need to do as I'm not very code-literate but it's a good start-off point 🙂
