I set up Essence Pro for a good friend of mine and can't get the theme to pull the 1st image from the content for the archive pages thumbnails. It seems to pull random images regardless of what the first image is. Suggestions??? Thanks!

If you would like a certain image to be displayed as the thumbnail image on the archive pages, you will need to set that image as the Featured Image.

Yes, Anita - I know that. Thanks anyway.

In Essence PRO if you add a featured image it shows full screen on the single blog page. I want the default home page image to show on the single blog page throughout the site and pull the first image from the post to the archive thumbnail. Cheers!

Okay, so what you wrote in reply is different than your initial question. What you want would be customization. You'd definitely would need someone to custom code the workings of that for you. I, unfortunately, don't have that level of skill to be able to do that for you.

To clarify, you want the front page header hero image to display on single posts and the 1st attachment image from the single post content to display as the featured image on archives?

You'll find the function for the featured image in genesis > lib > functions > image.php which shows you how the first-attachment works between lines 90 - 113.

Line 80 of the same file also includes a filter you can use in a custom function to modify the default functionality genesis_get_image_default_args

Based on testing, it doesn't use the first attachment in Essence Pro as the single post hero header, it uses the featured image. However, it does use the first attachment as the archive image which is what you want so you only need to modify the code for the single post hero header.

You'll also find the function for the essence_get_default_hero_background_image in helper functions.php on line 48 so you can use that function or the direct path to the image to set it as the single post header hero.

You should get the result you want if you don't add a featured image and make sure the first attachment image is the one you want to use on archives.

I think it would be better to modify the code so the featured image is used as the archive image and the front page header hero as the single post header hero.

I want to do the same thing, have most of the pages on the site use the same header, but I needed the thumbnail on the archives. Not using the featured image, but instead using the first attachment image gives me what I needed without changing any code. Thank you Brad!
