Toki Tover
MemberHello All,
Not sure what is happening but for 2 of my sites, when I choose the "content, primary sidebar" option for the layout, the sidebar stays on the right.
I checked in Chrome and Safari and it stays that way. One site tokitover.com just uses the genesis theme and bestbackpacksguide.com uses the eleven pro theme.
Any ideas why this will not work?
Thanks
Toki

MemberIt would help if you gave us a link to your site, but from what you're saying, everything is working exactly as it should be.
I mean...you say you're choosing the "content, primary sidebar" option and that the sidebar stays on the right...ummmm...that's exactly as it should be:
Content and then sidebar on the right side of the page. That's what "content, primary sidebar" means.

MemberHello
I gave both site urls in my first post.
For me, looking at both those sites via chrome and safari the side bar is on the left when I would like it on the right. "content, primary sidebar"
Could it be a browser issue or theme?

MemberSorry...because the links were incomplete they didn't show up as links here, so I didn't notice them...my bad. (I've always wanted to say "My bad" in real life...this is my big chance. Ha ha ha.)
Maybe this problem is actually a problem of semantics. Here's what I mean:
1. For the TokiTover site, you seem to be saying that the sidebar is on the left, but you want it on the right. But I don't see any sidebar at all on this site. What I see is a series of blog posts going down the right side of the page, with blank space on the left. There is no sidebar that I can see.
2. For the Best Backpacks site, you seem to be saying that the sidebar is on the left, but you want it on the right. I have to tell you that the sidebar *is* on the right side, and the content *is* on the left side. Maybe there's some confusion about the meaning of the term "sidebar." If you look at the right side of the page, you'll see the "Search" area and the list of "Pack Types"...that area is your sidebar. The other text on the page, with the headline, the graphic and all the text starting with, "Honestly, you would probably be happy..." is the content area.
I hope this helps.

MemberHere is my chance... me trying to explain what I mean is horrible, my bad. ha
Ok so here is what is happening.
From the tokitover site, when I am in the customize area I have the "content, primary sidebar" selected but the way the site shows up is "primary sidebar, content".
Same thing goes for the bestbackpacksguide site.
For whatever reason the sidebar stays in the "primary sidebar, content" position even though I change the option to "content, primary sidebar" and click save. Nothing changes.
When I look at the site in either Chrome or Safari, both sites have the "primary sidebar, content" look. I wanted the "content, primary sidebar" look.
I hope that explains what I mean better.
Thanks!

MemberHi Toki,
I'm sorry if this is going to make you feel even more frustrated, but I still don't see the problem. You say that you want to have the "content, primary sidebar" look.
OK.
So I looked at the "backpacks" site, and that's exactly what I see. I mean you *do* have the content, primary sidebar" look.
I'll put a screenshot at the bottom of this post...a screenshot I made of the home page of your site...and I've made some annotations to show you what I mean. I've tried to point out that the content area *is* on the left side of the page, and the sidebar *is* on the right side of the page...which is what is indicated by the "content, primary sidebar" setting.
Let me know what part of this I'm not understanding.

MemberInteresting. For you it looks the way its supposed to.
I attached a screenshot of how it looks for me. - http://www.bestbackpacksguide.com/images/Screen.pngLooks this way in Chrome but not Safari. Could it be the browser?
How could I fix this?
Thanks!

MemberWow...that *is* weird. No, I don't think it's your browser...although I suppose that's possible, but not likely since I've looked at your site in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (all Macintosh versions), and it always looks the same to me.
I wonder...are you running some kind of caching plugin that's keeping you from seeing it correctly?
Or...how about this? Have you tried signing out of your site...so you're not logged in...and then totally clear out your browser (browser cache, etc.) and then (while still signed out) take another look...force your browser to reload the page, etc.? And see how it looks after you do that? Or can you get someone else you know to look at it and see how it looks for them?
Meanwhile, a friend of mine who is a total expert...I'm going to ask him (if I can get a hold of him) to take a look at your problem here.

MemberMeanwhile, a friend of mine who is a total expert…I’m going to ask him (if I can get a hold of him) to take a look at your problem here.
And get a hold of me you did ... as I now attempt to put my already-dwindling reputation on the line 🙂
Let's focus on one site at a time to begin with. I'd like to start with Toki Tover if that's OK. The other site - Best Backpacks Guide - also uses the Eleven40 Pro theme ... although if you want help with that one, I would turn off the minify plugin thing you've got going there 🙂
Back to Toki Tover ...
The first thing that confuses me is your footer ... which says the site was built using CobaltApps' Dynamik Website Builder ... which is - itself - a child theme of sorts. Yet the site uses StudioPress' Eleven40 Pro theme ... which would not be consistent with the use of the Dynamik affiliate link.
If the site really was built using Dynamik then you will need to talk to Eric Hamm & co at Cobalt Apps. I suspect it's just an affiliate link 🙂 Can you confirm this point first?

MemberHaving said all that ... you should clear any caching plugins you may have installed (as Moody suggested).
Sometimes, browser inconsistency issues can be resolved by doing a hard refresh in your browser ...

MemberOK. I FOUND THE PROBLEM 🙂
You are missing class="home blog sidebar-content-sidebar" (and other attributes) in the <body> tag of your home page ... and similarly for all your pages, it would seem.
I'm not sure how you managed to do that ... possibly through a combination of plugins and/or Dynamik. Something somewhere in your setup is non-standard ... and you will need to somehow reset what's going on there.
Erik D. Slater: Digital Platform Consultant • LinkedInJuly 18, 2015 at 5:54 pm #159786Toki Tover
MemberWow thank you for looking into that.
I am not sure how all that happened either. I just tried to delete and re-upload the genesis and eleven pro themes and still does the same thing on my end. I also cleared browser like you suggested and deactivated all the plugins and still the same thing.
How can I go about fixing this?
July 18, 2015 at 8:08 pm #159790Erik D. Slater
MemberYep ... the problem persists. The <body> tag is missing all it's standard WordPress/Genesis attributes ... including the class attribute ... which is critical.
On closer inspection of the downloaded HTML source code, there is - in fact - a special character inside the <body> tag. Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer attempt to correct the issue by adding a default <body> tag to the rendered HTML output.
I have a feeling that the problem originates inside functions.php or a plugin that hooks into the body_class filter. But I don't want to speculate too much at this stage.
Can you please list - or provide a screenshot of - all the plugins you are using for tokitover.com only ... and whether or not they are active?

MemberOk sure!
tokitover.com/images/plugins.png
tokitover.com/images/plugin.pngI couldn't get all on a screenshot. I am so curious as to how this has happened. I appreciate your help and hope you can figure this out 🙂
Thanks

MemberThanks for the screenshots 🙂 The only thing I noticed at a glance (and likely not related) was "Google XML Sitemaps" and "WordPress SEO". I think you could remove "Google XML Sitemaps" since Yoast's plugin handles the XML sitemaps for you.
I also see you're not using a caching plugin, e.g. W3 Total Cache or similar ... so that's not getting in the way of this problem.
(1) Can you to deactivate (neither delete nor uninstall) all those plugins ... so we can see what's going on without them?
(2) Is your site now a Dynamik-free zone?
(3) Does your functions.php file contain any custom code?
We'll definitely get to the bottom of this one 🙂
Erik D. Slater: Digital Platform Consultant • LinkedInJuly 19, 2015 at 3:07 pm #159823Toki Tover
MemberHi!
Ok I went ahead and deactivated all the plugins. I haven't had that dynamic installed for a while, that might have been a aff link, either way I removed it.
I also didn't see anything in the functions.php file other than what it came with, I didn't add anything there.
I did delete the google sitemap plugin also and activated the yoast version 🙂
Thank you!!

I'm really quite the soft-n-fluffy type, like my cats 🙂
The result is still the same. Something somewhere is clearly not right. Can you send me your FTP details to [email protected] please? DO NOT POST THEM HERE ... since these pages are publicly viewable 🙂

MemberI have cats myself!
Ok details sent to that email.
And yes I feel very lucky 🙂
