Difficulty updating the Prose theme

I tried to update the Prose theme but the "update" link on the admin panel from wordpress takes me to a different Prose theme from a company called CS Themes. The minute I updated my site went down.

I got Bluehost to get everything back to the way it was prior to the update but now I'm confused as to how to update from Prose 1.0 to the 1.5.2 version. If I upload the Prose 1.5.2 zip file to my site (instead of clicking "update now" from the manage theme admin panel) and activate it, will it keep all my design settings? Will I confuse everything and break my site again? What are my options?

I would definitely have your site scanned for malware before you go any further. Genesis child themes never have updates available in the WordPress dashboard - any updates are considered a whole new theme. There is no compelling reason to update anything other than the Genesis framework since the child themes are just skins that change the way Genesis looks.

Because the new version of Prose is a separate theme from your old one, you will likely lose your design settings. I would advise making a full backup of your site before you do anything, and don't delete the old Prose theme folder - just rename it so it will still be there in case the new version breaks the site.

Thank you so much! I'll check for malware. So even though I have Prose 1.0 (and the latest genesis framework), and Prose 1.5.2 exists, I never update Prose to the newer version? I never realized that.

You can if you want to, but it would be like changing to a whole new theme. You don't need to update, but you can if you just prefer the newer version.

I'm having the same exact problem! I recently acquired this site that is using Prose child theme and I was having a different problem when the Bluehost tech restored my site and then proceeded to deactivate all of my plugins and themes to find the issue (duplicate image showing on all of the posts in the homepage but fine in the individual post page). He didn't lose my content but since there was a "Prose" update at the time during his trial and error method of fixing the issue, "Prose" somehow got updated. The tech said that my theme must have an issue so I need to look for another theme!

After hours of trying to figure out the problem, I also noticed that it's no longer the Studiopress theme, but a theme from CS Themes. I just started using WP last month so I am very new to this AND I don't know how to code to save my life -- I can copy and paste though. Have you been able to fix the issue?? Please share 🙂

Please open up a ticket with StudioPress support if you haven't already - I've reported this issue for them to investigate but it would help tremendously if they heard the details of your experience. Hopefully they'll be able to find out what's going on.

Ewleong - What I ended up doing is restoring my site to the way it was prior to the updates (Bluehost was super helpful and since we were on the phone already, they just restored it on the spot to the way it was that day at 4am). I then did any updates minus the Prose theme update.

Emma1202 - I ended up having BlueHost do the same by restoring my site but my WP dashboard still shows that I have an update for Prose. Does yours? If so, does it concern you at all?

@ewleong - If you upload the latest version of Prose (1.5.2) from your StudioPress downloads section, you won't see that update notification anymore.

To do that, first download the latest version. Go to your Prose design settings page and use the Toggle All button to open all your design settings. Save that, and copy any custom CSS and/or functions to a doc on your computer, then go to Appearance > Themes and activate the Genesis framework, then delete Prose. Once you install the newer version, you should get all your design settings back automatically. Once that's done, you won't see the nag to update Prose anymore.

@Nutsandbolts - If I update to Prose (1.5.2), won't it change the look entirely according to your earlier response to Emma1202? If I want to keep the look the same, shouldn't I just keep it as is? However, if I keep the same version of Prose, will the prompt to update eventually go away when WP corrects the mix up between Studiopress and CS Themes? I'm worried that if I upload the latest version, it will change the look of my site. Thanks in advance for your insight.

After I opened a ticket, I ended up doing just what Nutsandbolts suggested. I backed up my site, went to the Genesis tab, exported all my settings so I could import them back up once I activated Prose 1.5.2, and I made a manual record of my Prose design settings just in case. Clearly, I'm slightly paranoid, but I wanted to be sure I could restore the site's look. (I hadn't touched the CSS which made it easier) . When I uploaded the zip file for Prose 1.5.2, activated it, it worked great and the look remained the same.
