Hello,
currently I am extremely "unhappy" with Studiopress, to put it into nice words. Others might consider me very angry.
We did an "update" of the child theme Agentpress for a real estate site from version 1 to version 2, only to detect, that almost entirely everything was changed here. We lost all property details, and the homepage lost all it's content because of new widget areas.
I still do not understand, why one would provide another version of a child theme, which in reality is a new theme? Without giving any warning before it's activation? We even could not switch back to the old theme version, something was changed irreversibly.
Please give child themes a different name (even Agentpress2 would do the job) when you change their functionality so fundamentally. Thank you.
In the future I won't use Studiopress child themes anymore.

We're truly sorry the theme change caused issues. While we do occasionally update the child themes, none of them cause an upgrade notice in the admin area. It is not the intention to upgrade child themes. They are newer updated versions for your next project or the next buyer.
You may notice we are changing names on refreshed themes with the word PRO afterwards.
Widget area content will be moved to the Inactive Widgets box on the widgets screen.
In the cause of Agentpress and the previous version, the screenshots show a different designed theme with different areas of content on the home page.
As well, you can file a ticket on this topic in our help desk - instead of the forums - where we can see it more quickly. These forums are not for official support, they are for the community to help each other with customization issues and general WordPress questions.

Sorry, but an update (as you said) of a child theme which changes fundamental features and properties (the renamed homepage widget areas is the least problem here) is not an update. The usage of version numbers, as we know that for genesis, the wordpress core and tons of plugins, implies the possibility of an update (due to security reasons, additional options, whatever), tricking us into "updating" the child theme, as we do with the aforementioned software. I consider it bad to have a working website destroyed that way.
And if it's not intended to implement updates of child themes, then I would like to read that somewhere in biggest possible letters as a warning before.

Yes and we hear your concerns, which is why I suggested a trip into help desk so we can address it properly. 🙂
