    Hey there, guys!

The Genesis theme has really been a breakthrough development theme for me personally. It's inspired me to learn HTML, CSS and some design in an effort to break into webdev. I need to make a business website for a friend, and I'm wondering if making my own child theme from the Genesis framework from scratch would be more advantageous to learning the trade than buying a child theme.

To give you some background, I'm grasping the basic web languages fairly well, but I don't know a lick of PHP. I'm in the process of learning it, but it may be a while.

Example: I downloaded the Genesis theme and started playing with a child theme from scratch, and I can't even figure out how to add photo thumbnails in the body... or even make a body at all! It's not in the widgets. I know, I'm a newb. Gotta start somewhere!

Any help or resources is much appreciated!

    Eager to learn,

    Matt

I would say to start with the basic Genesis Sample theme. This will have all the meat and potatoes of what you need. From there you can add in your own widgets, customized your own home page, etc., etc. But at least all of the important elements like the body and also all of the sidebars and basic functions.
