Just became a member of the Genesis family. I'm looking forward to the solid development and performance of the Genesis framework.

My current site is a slightly customized version of the free Skeleton theme. I've got two basic questions before I begin converting and redesigning my site using Genesis.

    1. I purchased the Executive child theme. Do I need to make a child of this theme in case I mess it up customizing its CSS? Or do I just make backups of my WordPress site before making major edits so I can restore if needed?

    2. Is there a good article about how I redesign my site while I keep the current site up and running? Do I create a new database and copy images and other resources into its directory using FTP? Once I'm done, how do I make that my official site (so my URL points to it, not the old site)?

Hope my questions were clear enough to ask for the right information!

In the past, I was able to use a plugin to test a non-activated theme in live mode but those plugins have not been updated. Maybe someone here can share one if it still exists.

As for images, your last theme, in theory at least, should not have uploaded any images into the theme folder. It should be in a folder that WordPress can use. So when you install a new theme, you need to customize how that theme will serve up your site. Your images should still all work.

Yes, always grab a backup before a major update like this. Or for even small edits for that matter.

Once you activate your new theme, it will be live. It shouldn't take too long to customize if you follow Executive start up instructions. It will get you going until you can tweak the minor things.

If Genesis would make a test area for us to develop a new / unactivated theme, that would be great wouldn't it?
