    If we are using a child theme of Genesis, in order to modify the code do we need to make a child theme of the child theme? Or can we just add our own CSS code to the regular child theme? I don't want to lose modifications when updating WordPress...

    Melissa:

    Don't make a child theme of a child theme. Make your changes directly into the CSS of the child theme.

    Updates to WordPress and the Genesis Framework will NOT impact the CSS changes you make to your child theme.

    I had this exact same question. I'm so glad someone else just asked, thanks @Melissadee.

    @Susan
    - so if we've purchased a child theme we're essentially modifying the css on that theme? Is it best practice to rename the theme/folder.

    Than you Susan! I was watching a popular Youtube WordPress vlogger and she did exactly that - made a child theme of the child theme. I won't mention names....

    @melissadee - I could stand corrected but I think making a child theme of a child theme (called a grandchild theme) is best practice with wordpress. My understanding is that because Genesis extrapolates the functionality into a framework it's not necessary to follow the 'normal' conventions.

    I could be wrong, hopefully someone will correct me if I am.

    @Lloyd - there is no need to rename the child theme. Child themes don't get updated automatically, so you won't lose any customizations etc. that you make, so renaming folders etc. is not necessary.
