I managed to delete my main database the other night and lost my site!

Have had to re-create it from scratch - not fun.

So.... how does everyone back up their sites?

I have been recommended to use backup buddy but it's $79

Is it worth it are there cheaper solutions?

    Thanks

    Roger

If not, install this plugin called WP-Database Manager - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-dbmanager/. I used this on all of my sites and client sites. It's a great tool. This just backs up the database. Or you can use this one called "Complete Central WordPress Backup Plugin" - http://blackbirdi.com/2012/10/25/complete-central-backup-wordpress-plugin/. It's free.

    I am kinda old hand...

    * Go to Tools > Export > All contents and it will download the content to your hard drive. Then...

    * Go to Genesis > Export > All content and download that

    * Go to WP-DB Manager - and download the latest database

I save all three in a folder marked for that month. I know it's not a "one click" backup - but this is how I've done it for years!

By the way, the Cache version is still in Google - click here. You can do a copy/paste if it helps you to re-create the information. You need to hurry though because the cache version won't be there long.

Thanks for that, I have installed the plugin backed up the database and exported the settings from theme and genesis.

However the total size of my backup folder is only 250kb

Where do all the photos get saved to?

Should I be backing up anything else?

Well, like I said, I am "old hat".... you can use FTP and backup your Images folder as well as your theme, especially if you customized it. I use Filezilla FTP and I just log in and drag my image folder over to my desktop. I don't change the dates or anything, I just click and drag. Sometimes a one-click action can be flawed, but I am just really anal about my backup!

Did you do your Tools > Export to your desktop at all? It's important to do that too. It renders an XML of your content.

Thanks I have found where they are now and just backed up the entire wp-content folder

I am getting a warning with WP-DBManager about the location of the backup being visible to the public?

Your backup folder MIGHT be visible to the public

To correct this issue, move the .htaccess file from wp-content/plugins/wp-dbmanager to /content/HostingPlus/r/o/rogerlapin.co.uk/web/wp-content/backup-db

I am running on a Zeus server so not sure what to do with this? It's putting a big red banner across my wordpress

You have to manually fix that - do this:

    > Open up using FTP
    > Look inside the WP-DBmanager plugin for the htaccess.txt file (wp-content/plugins/wp-dbmanager)
    > MOVE it to the backup-db file folder (rogerlapin.co.uk/web/wp-content/backup-db)
    > Then RENAME htaccess.txt to .htaccess

This is a security measure. Once you do that, then revisit the dashboard and the warning will be gone.

OK Thanks, however on my server Zeus the .htaccess has no effect so I ensured the folder was not public and it isn't and then found you can remove the message by doing commenting out this file
    add_action('admin_notices', 'dbmanager_admin_notices');
    in wp-dbmanager.php

Thanks for all your help, I am now fully backed up and it didnt' cost a penny - maybe one day I will buy the one button option but for now I am just happy all my customisations are safe

I use a plugin called Backup Creator. It's only $7 for up to 5 sites and it backs up everything. I also use this plugin to clone sites. Very easy to use and works like a charm.

(That's not an affiliate link, BTW.)
