I've seen this before, but I'm not sure what causes it or what the fix is. It's my understanding that, if you do not set a featured image on a post but you set the Content Archives to display one, the site will use the first image it finds embedded in the post's contents.

I have a site where that only works occasionally. I've tried disabling all the plugins to no effect. Does anyone have any suggestions where else I could look?

    Thanks

Not all themes will automatically set the first image in a post as the featured image.

Without knowing which theme you are using, or your site's URL, it's a little difficult to provide more specific assistance.

In this case, it's the Beautiful Pro theme. The issue appears to be that, if I'm uploading a new image for the post, it gets used as a featured image. But if I use a post that's already in the library, it does not.

    Hi David,

The code that pulls the first image usually can only pull the image that is attached to the post (uploaded to the post). So, in the cases where you want to use an image already in your library, I'd recommend also setting it as your featured image.

    Hope that helps!

    You are right.

The archive image will be pulled from the featured image regardless of how you add it however the image displayed after the title is pulled from the 1st image you insert into the post, unless you remove it.

You can also remove or modify the code which displays a post image before or after your single post entry titles. Here's more on that. http://wpsites.net/web-design/display-featured-image-before-or-after-entry-title-on-single-posts-pages/

If you add an image as a featured image, it will be displayed on your archives as a post thumbnail and not as a featured image after your single posts title.

Either way, you can change this using code to do anything you want.
