    Trying to create an extract on the front page using the character count on the Featured Page widget. Why does the character count not represent an actual character count? The difference between specifying 150 and 151 is several words, not a single character.

    Can I use Page excerpts instead? If so, how?

    I'm pretty low level at this: capable of editing PHP, but only if I'm given strict instructions!

    I don't think the Genesis Featured page widget supports excerpts out of the box but you can add support for page excerpts to your child themes functions file and then modify the plugin however that requires advanced PHP coding skills and some time.

    add_post_type_support( 'page', 'excerpt' );

    You could also search for a plugin which includes the functionality you need.

    Thanks so much.

    Yep; I want to avoid that at this stage. As Author Pro is a template aimed at writing, I think there should be a more obvious fix to showcase writing elegantly on it. I'll submit a support ticket and see what happens, but thanks again for your input.
