    Folks,

    I'm looking over the Genesis Framework and i'd really like to hit the buy button, but i'm a bit confused. I've been using pre-made professional themes up until this point (kriesi themes), and i'm not sure how i'll have to change my paradigm to use Genesis.

    Suppose i had a client that wanted something somewhat like this: http://www.kriesi.at/themedemo/?theme=enfold

    If i found a Genesis theme that was similar, where would i edit it to achieve similar results? I'm not asking for help with CSS/HTML etc. What i mean is that i'm used to buying a theme and altering the look via a child theme. Well a Genesis theme *is* a child theme. If i edit it in the editor function in WordPress (like i've seen a few people do in videos), then when the child theme is updated I'll loose all my changes.

    Do different child themes give you more or less functionality than others?

    Can you have different page layouts within a site? Is that determined by the child theme you choose or the framework?

    Do i get a "bare" child theme with the framework or am i actually spending $99 + the cost for a theme?

    Thanks

    You can submit an official ticket to StudioPress to get the full answers to your question, but in a nutshell:

    The Genesis framework by itself is $59.99. You should NEVER make changes to the Genesis files; they will be overwritten with any updates.

    You can use the Sample theme (which is free) to customize if you want a bare bones child theme, otherwise, you can purchase a child theme (which will give you the cost of $99 you mentioned), and make changes to the child theme.

    I hope that helps!

    Have you seen this? Cobalt Apps' Genesis Extender Plugin will give you added functionality regardless of the StudioPress Child Theme you use.

    Thanks for the price clarification Susan. Yes, Kelly i've seen that it looks interesting, but it appears to be a overlay on the CSS. The screen shots don't expand so i can't tell what i'm looking at.

    I guess another way to ask would be: if i want to customize a child theme, how would i do that in code (open file in editor and edit it) without my changes being obliterated with the next child theme update? I mean aside from making a copy of the child theme and updating that, which might not be within the license and wouldn't then be updated.

    The common answer in this forum is that Genesis childtheme's are rarely updated => Choice A

    Choice A: Code Editor to make customizations directly on the StudioPress Childtheme's css and functions.php files.

    Choice B: Overlay (like Genesis Extender) or https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/

    Why Genesis? A philosophical question from a newcomer.

    Genesis function: genesis();
