Thanks Tom. Yes, that example you linked to is the one I wanted. Studiopress support provided the link to this tutorial - http://my.studiopress.com/tutorials/category-blog-page/ - and I followed those steps. But the description at the top of the page is still not showing up. So I'll have to play around a little more and try to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've created the description. I've created a new page that links to the category. The correct posts are showing up on the page. But the description doesn't appear. Here is the page I'm referring to on my site.
KaryMemberI decided to change themes. So this is no longer needed.
December 6, 2013 at 3:56 am in reply to: Balance Theme "Make left/right widgets static on all pages! #77328KaryMemberI'm still not 100% clear what you mean so what I *think* you mean might actually be an insult to your question. If this isn't what you meant, just disregard.
The content area will be as large/long as the content you have created there. So if you want to add content to the static page you created named HOME, just type your content and it will appear and your page will be as long as needed to accommodate it. If you want it longer, the best I can say is to create a DIV in the HTML editor for that page and give that div a class name.
Add that class to your CSS and give it a min height of whatever amount you want. For example,
.homeDiv { min-height:500px; }
As an aside, if you don't want the header text to appear in the content area of your homepage, you can add this to your CSS…
.post-572 h1 { display:none; }
That's a simple hack and can probably be fixed in a better way. But it works as long as you don't delete the current homepage and create a new one. The number 572 is referencing that specific page's H1 tag. Also, no other H1 tag would appear on that page as long as you have that class on your CSS page. So if you need a better fix, you'll have to edit the code.
December 3, 2013 at 1:38 am in reply to: Balance Theme "Make left/right widgets static on all pages! #76774KaryMemberHi,
Glad it worked for you.
(1) To make the widgets appear on the single post pages, you'll have to do some major editing of the theme. You'll need to read some tutorials on how to do that and add a new page in your child theme's folder as you can't change the genesis core. If that's more than you care to do, what would work is creating a widget and place it in the blog's sidebar. You can style the widget using CSS to look similar to the one at the top. You can turn on JetPack and use the feature where you can show/hide widgets on certain pages/posts. When you have the widget created, just make certain you hide it on all pages. That way, it will only appear on the sidebar of single posts. (I think that will work. You might have to play around with that until you get it showing where you want it and not showing everywhere else.).(2) I'm not sure what you mean here. When I look at your site, the gray bar run's 100% across the page no matter how wide the browser window and the content is always centered. The color of that gray bar is #333333 in the CSS.
December 1, 2013 at 1:58 am in reply to: Balance Theme "Make left/right widgets static on all pages! #76399KaryMemberOh…one thing I should add. If you want those widgets to appear on your blog's index page, then leave the page's name alone. It's current name is home.php. Leave it that name and those widgets will appear on the index page of your blog. (Not the single post pages).
If you don't want those widgets to appear on the index page of your blog, then rename the home.php page. You could simply name it to something like home-old.php
December 1, 2013 at 1:44 am in reply to: Balance Theme "Make left/right widgets static on all pages! #76398KaryMemberOne thing you could do is recreate the content of the current home.php page and name it something else. This is important in case you want to go back to the original way the theme works.
At the top of the page, currently the code is written:
<?php add_action( 'genesis_meta', 'balance_home_genesis_meta' ); /**
Make certain you add the following to the top under the beginning PHP tag:
<?php /* Template Name: WidgetPage */ add_action( 'genesis_meta', 'balance_home_genesis_meta' ); /**
This will create a new template page that you can use for all of your website's pages. You will not be able to choose this for your blog post pages.
Where it says 'WidgetPage' you can name it anything you like.
Now, whenever you create a new page and want those widgets to appear on the page, choose this template from the drop-down list under Page Attributes for that page.
To make sure everything appears correctly, create a new static page and name it Home, or whatever. Make certain this page has the template chosen above. Create a second page and name it Blog. Make certain to choose BLOG as the template page.
You'll then need to go into the Admin area > Settings > Reading
At the top of the page, select the radio button for STATIC PAGE and choose front page = HOME
and posts page = BLOG.When you create your menu, make certain you provide links to your BLOG page and your HOME page of your website.
Hope that helps.
KaryMemberIf you install the Jetpack plugin and turn on "custom CSS," you'll get a separate CSS file that won't be impacted or change whenever you upgrade your StudioPress theme. From there, simply copy and paste this code and save. It will turn off the borders of all your sidebar widgets.
.sidebar .widget {
border: none;
}KaryMemberFYI, I submitted a support ticket for the issue. Obviously the code is no longer working with the newest IOS update. It worked previously to me updating.
KaryMemberI'm sorry...but I don't remember what I had to do to fix it. It's been awhile since I figured it out. However, I don't think it was anything that would help. Your post caused me to look at my website on the iPad now that I've upgraded to the newest version of IOS. The top links no longer work.
Just for grins, I took a peak at the Scribble Demo that Studio Press has and if its any consolation, their site didn't work on my iPad either. So it must have something to do with the latest IOS update.
I suppose someone should let them know. 🙁
KaryMemberI have found the culprit. It is odd...but it is in the CSS and probably only appears on Macintosh computers. The default CSS is...
font-family: "Century Gothic", AppleGothic, Arial, sans-serif;
Removing the AppleGothic font from the font-family solves the problem. That's it. So the new CSS looks like this...
font-family: "Century Gothic", Arial, sans-serif;
By removing that one font, it doesn't matter what the 'lead' font is...Lato, Century Gothic, or any other Adobe Edge Web Font or Google Font. It all works as you would expect. So if you're using the PYT Theme, even if you don't have a Macintosh, visitors to your site might be viewing with a MAC and are seeing the weird kerning occur with apostrophes after numbers.
KaryMemberDev, Again thank you for your help. I just want Support to understand that the problem with the apostrophe is happening with the Century Gothic...which is the DEFAULT font coded in the CSS for this theme.
I changed it to Lato trying to fix the problem. I tried a few fonts, but none work. I've used Lato on a few blogs and have never had this problem. I've changed it back to the default CSS in case anyone wants to see it. Here is the test page that shows the kerning problem.
http://www.unstuckification.com/test-page/
Eamon, I don't want to slice hairs with you. But a few things...yes, you are being pedantic and not really helping to solve the problem. But no matter. I get you. Really I do. My husband can be very similar and just can't help himself. I've learned to ignore him as it prevents a lot of arguments. LOL
Secondly, although dates like 1950s or 50s are not typed with an apostrophe, I believe that numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4 can go either way. Maybe not absolutely correct...I think it is easier to read and comprehend the meaning. Heck, even Destiny's Child and Mariah Carey named an album #1's. LOL
Besides, the woman who "invented" the system I'm writing about types it that way. There is a community of thousands and thousands of people who type it that way. So in order to be more easily understood (grammatically correct or incorrect), I'm typing it that way.
KaryMemberThanks Dev...that was the problem. When I first installed the theme and noticed the problem I DID change the font. Lato was not the font that came with the theme originally. So I tried changing it but to no avail. I suppose I never tried Arial. I can imagine that would be the case since I don't like Arial. But I guess I'm stuck with it for now if I keep this theme. It's the darndest thing. I have several blogs that use Google fonts and Genesis themes. i've even got another one that uses Lato. But this is the first time I've ever noticed this happening with the apostrophe's.
thanks for your help.
KaryMemberWell....since I'm not getting an answer here. I guess the next step for me is to report a bug in the PYT theme. If that doesn't work, then I'll need to use another theme and ditch this one.
KaryMemberHi Sridhar, i appreciate your help. But this isn't the way I'm typing the apostrophe, its the way the theme is rendering what has been typed. I have come to discover that it is only happening in "Pretty Young Thing" theme. I have created some screen shots that show what I'm talking about. It is only in the PYT theme where the apostrophe spacing is a problem and only when the apostrophe is typed after a number.
Yes, I realize technically the solution is to just use the entity number or name. HOWEVER, I have a few problems with that. First, its a PITA to remember to do this each and every time. Secondly, I shouldn't have to. Also, if I inadvertently go from TEXT edit to HTML edit, WordPress strips out the entity number or entity name and replaces it with the same apostrophe I'd type with my keyboard...and I'm right back where I started.
Anyone can see the test page I made here - Test Page
KaryMemberThank you Brad! That last code worked just fine. I'm using the "is_page" option as before. But now its working just as it did in the default theme. This is awesome because I've been looking all over the web. So many people are having issues with the tiled gallery (not just in Studio Press). You're a genius. 🙂
KaryMemberThanks again, but still not working. I changed
is_page_template( 'full-width-content.php' )
to
is_page( 719 )
-- 719 is the page id for that specific page.I loaded the Twenty-twelve theme and the gallery will go to full page. And as you can see, the text goes to full page. It is only the gallery tiles that do not. So I'm starting to think that there is something about the Genesis themes that isn't compatible with Jetpack's tiled gallery. Which is a bummer.
KaryMemberHi Brad,
I'm not 100% if what I'm supposed to do I actually did correctly. But I'm have a similar issue with the Jetpack tiled gallery displaying full width on a page. I have selected the "full width" page (no sidebars) in the page's layout. And copied/pasted the code you have above in my functions file. I increased the width to 1000 just to see if anything would happen. It did not resolve the problem.I have tried both "random" layouts and chronological order but that didn't help the actual width of the gallery either...just the order in which the thumbnails appear. You can see the page I'm talking about below. Do you have any more suggestions as to how to fix this?
Thanks.
http://www.unstuckification.com/artwork/KaryMemberI have looked at the site in as many browsers as possible. The "Search" hyperlink works on a PC in IE 8 (don't have 9), Firefox and Chrome. On a MAC, it works fine in Safari and Chrome. But it doesn't work on a Mac in Firefox. Would anyone know enough about JQuery to determine why this is happening?
BTW, clicking on the link in the navigation bar itself doesn't work. But the correct address is in the address bar (techiemuse.com#services). When I refresh the page it takes me to the correct location. I've never seen anything like this in my life.
Any clues?
