February 14, 2014 at 5:05 am in reply to: Add widget to right of reduced width Outreach slider #90260wizz6113Member
I've a screengrab here of the widget - slider issue, as the site is in local dev. I've got some code visible more or less in the right 'wrap' but clearly it's a bit of a way off filling the white space to right of my reduced slider width.
Thanks in advance guys!
wizz6113MemberNo, I think it's case of the coding. I reduced the slider width in functions.php to read 760px x 400px. I like you need to add a widget area to the right. Think it's something to do with the hook position first then CSS second to render it visible. Hope someone's reading??? Please - we're both trying to set up NGO style sites by the looks of it.
wizz6113MemberExactly my issue too - just posted a similiar query. I've tried some code from Brad Dalton as I found similar queries, but it won't work. I hope one of us manages this. I have reduced the slider width to 760px so it tallies with inner page content area. I am not even sure if that's the correct width.
But the main issue is setting up that new widget area right of a reduced width slider. Did you get any replies to this Kathie?
wizz6113MemberI've now (in addition) put the Font Awesome code snippet in the header using Theme settings<header & footer but I still can't see the font icon in the utility bar. Should I be adding something to CSS too?
Tnxwizz6113MemberI had the same thoughts as I too am new to Genesis. I've read around and gathered that one goes ahead and customises the original child theme at will, as it's the framework Genesis that gets updates. Sure, some themes have been updated to 'pro' versions with html 5 recently, but just stick with your child theme until you're ready, a few years down the line, to change theme altogether.
Carrie Dils has some great advice on genesis, and loads of very useful tutorials. She addresses just this issue in her post:
http://www.carriedils.com/third-party-genesis-themes/
which is a Q&A of FAQs on genesis vs other 3rd party themes. Scroll down a bit for the answer to your query here.
February 4, 2014 at 3:11 pm in reply to: Adding featured content areas – widgets – to homepage #88604wizz6113MemberThis is the code I now have in the functions.php:
//* Add the page widget in the content - HTML5
add_action( 'genesis_entry_content', 'home_featured_4' );
function home_featured_4() {
if ( is_front_page() )
genesis_widget_area( 'home-featured-4', array(
'before' => '<div class="home-featured-1">',
) );
}//* Add the page widget in the content - HTML5
add_action( 'genesis_entry_content', 'home_featured_5' );
function home_featured_5() {
if ( is_front_page() )
genesis_widget_area( 'home-featured-5', array(
'before' => '<div class="home-featured-2">',
) );
}February 4, 2014 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Adding featured content areas – widgets – to homepage #88601wizz6113MemberI am fiddling with the CSS code and am not sure if I use:
a) .home-featured-4 (and .home-featured-5) for the two new widget areas (albeit they are in the genesis_entry_content area. And just slot them into the styling where the .home-featured-1,2,3 are placed so as not to replicate styling in entirety.
b) Or...whether to create a new style area called (guessing here): .genesis . widget-area (and then having some other code to identify the new featured slots.
Am in a bit of a quandary of this. I tried a version of (a) and screwed up the position of the current up top featured slots. So think it's (b) but not sure of the correct code.
If you or another could point me in the right direction, that would great. Tnx.
February 4, 2014 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Adding featured content areas – widgets – to homepage #88597wizz6113MemberBrad,
Thanks for this and it worked fine! No white screen of death! Always nervous of that function php file even in local dev as php is a bit raw for me (learning while doing and trying to do a course on Lynda at the same time).I 've now got two replicated slots in the genesis_entry_content hook area. As they are running one below the other, and not left align and centre, I guess it's a case of replicating the original CSS styling for the original featured slots and adjusting the widget name.
wizz6113MemberI took your code advice 'nuts & bolts' to adjust my header to a custom one in Streamline Pro.
Basically, I uploaded new size (full width) header jpg to media (in my case 1140px width); then added it to Simple Hooks Plugin (checking remove default header) using html code between <div> </div>; and removed that .site-header padding in the CSS that you recommend.
All worked fine for me. No issues. Seemed simple. But I wouldn't have known the padding bit was the issue in rendering it correctly on the site.
Just to note in case someone else wishes to replace default header (often smaller size than full width) with custom one.
Thanks for this code posting.
January 30, 2014 at 5:53 am in reply to: Reduce navigation bar Streamline Pro keeping text & pointer positions #87793wizz6113MemberThanks so much for these pointers. Your CSS notes make sense. I do have Firebug so will try to use it more. I am learning as a I do, so to speak, so it's a bit of taking time out to study CSS properly and having to get an immediate web project up online. For now, it's just our own site, so it's a good practice place. I'll definitely dive into that link you sent. Thanks again for your kind help.
January 29, 2014 at 2:37 pm in reply to: Reduce navigation bar Streamline Pro keeping text & pointer positions #87727wizz6113MemberThanks so much for that - really resolved the issue - cursor now where it should be and menu items pretty near centre width.
I get confused with the navbar refs in the CSS as I come across both .genesis references as well as then later on 'primary' and 'secondary' navigation - I really wasn't sure which to edit. I notice that you added that second bit of code in the .genesis code If you've time and can help me, I'd like to know the difference between these nav ref places?!
Also, I am trying to find how to reduce the width of the secondary navbar, without incurring the same / further problems. I am guessing I edit somewhere around line: 1206 rather than 1091? But again, I am not sure which to opt for. Thanks for your kind help.
wizz6113MemberI think I edit this code in functions.php:
//* Add the after entry section
add_action( 'genesis_entry_footer', 'streamline_after_entry', 10 );
function streamline_after_entry() {if ( ! is_singular( 'post' ) ) return;
genesis_widget_area( 'after-entry', array(
'before' => '<div class="after-entry widget-area">',
'after' => '</div>',
) );January 28, 2014 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Navigation cursor pointer position issues Streamline Pro #87566wizz6113MemberI think it has something to do with this code as changing the font size in this snippet made the pointer smaller:
.nav-primary .genesis-nav-menu a:before {
content: "";
display: block;
font-size: 30px;
font-size: 3.0rem;
height: 30px;
margin-top: -12px;
margin-top: -1.2rem;
text-align: center;
text-shadow: none;
}wizz6113MemberNick,
I discovered the 'inline' code in a totally different part of the CSS. On line 1280. All resolved now! Thanks.The problem is that 'featured content' seems to crop up a couple of times in the lengthy CSS so one can't always find the right part to edit. I am a newbie to it all, but thanks to forum members, and past issue threads as well, I am coping.
PS. Nick, forgot to say your plugin resolved a major issue with that featured content customising so thanks for that big time!
wizz6113Memberthanks Nick,
I've left aligned the text around a square image, so that's sorted, I just need to adjust the actual custom excerpt lenght for neatness. However, the padding or whatever around the (defunct) button now 'read more' text eludes me. I can find this in the CSS which might be where I need to adjust padding? As you see, I've put align left on the text already in this part of the code.
Serious thanks for your help!
/* Featured Content

margin-bottom: 2rem;

padding: 0 0 2.4rem;
}.featured-content .entry-title {
font-size: 24px;
font-size: 2.4rem;

.featured-content .entry-content {

text-align:left;

padding: 0;
}.featured-content .entry-meta {

.featured-content .entry-time,
.featured-content .entry-comments-link {

}wizz6113MemberNick thanks, yes, I am sure it's CSS somewhere but I prob not seeing the wood for trees. I am working local dev so I've taken a screen grab and put it up on our current site as a hidden page here:
http://www.strategyworks.net/sw-streamline-read-button-featured-widget-issue/
If you've any ideas how I can get the 'read more' text to butt up (leaving a few space gap) to the custom excerpt, like on that dog site link above, that would be great. Thanks!
wizz6113MemberHi, I used your Featured Page Advanced plugin to customise my featured homepage slots in Genesis Streamline Pro theme.
One question, I've tweaked the CSS to remove the theme's huge 'read more' buttons so as to have just a text 'read more' link. But I want to see how I can run the text link directly on (with a few spaces between) the custom excerpt text. A bit like on this site here:
I have opted in your plugin settings to left align my icons. Now though I have ragged left text against the image. So that's an issue to sort too, and I'm not sure how, via your plugin or via some CSS code somewhere. Any ideas on these two points? I
January 28, 2014 at 5:24 am in reply to: Reduce navigation bar Streamline Pro keeping text & pointer positions #87461wizz6113MemberThanks Asterbird, but that didn't work. I ended up with the menu text floating nearer the navbar centre width, but the cursor below it! Weird. The second piece of code gave a large gap between the drop down sub nav labels. It must be something to do with 'floating' the navbar text, but also somehow uncoupling its location from that cursor which must stay put up top!
Anyone ideas? Thanks so much though for the help.
wizz6113MemberOK, an update - I have got into Bitnami's WP and found themes > Streamline. Should I replace the Streamline theme function.php with a virgin copy from my original zip downloads? Would that do it?
wizz6113MemberI am now totally out of the functions.php page, and can't access anything on the regular localhost/wp-admin log in. I can get to bitnami my php and mySQL though. Not sure how any of this helps! But pretty desperate now. Any help gratefully received.
