Unfortunately, child themes do get updated - just not very often!
In my case I plan to do a fresh install of the child theme, once I can transfer a domain to my new host. Thereafter, I can apply my own styles and changes to functions.php.Metro Pro
Type: StudioPress Version: 2.2.1 Updated: 1/31/17July 15, 2017 at 9:34 am in reply to: Suggestions for Genesis and non Genesis plugins /widgets to add #209145westerdaledMemberHi
Thanks for replying, I will investigate the ones I haven't used before. Incidentally, Yoast verses Genesis Framework SEO settings - tho that is probably a topic in itself 😉
westerdaledMemberI understand what you are saying. My original thinking was to reduce the impact of updates to the child theme CSS including reapplying my own styles. Not so bad if they were in one place but what if they are scattered around the different sections of styles.css .
I guess to keep it simple then add changes styles.css and not say the enqueue in functions.php e.g.

I have followed your advice and found: The Ultimate Guide to WordPress Multisite . What this reveals; is I can't used mulitsite as I have mycompany.com and mycompany.blog domains, so no sub domains or paths. I am happy with this arrangement.

Thanks, you have convinced me as this seems so much easier . One thing I thought of which isn't a showstopper. I am currently deploying an index.html (Coming Soon") on one of the sites I am going transfer to what, will ultimately be the multisite WordPress host. I guess any sites at this location would all show the Coming Soon Page, regardless of any not being in this state.

Thanks for replying. To elaborate on what I have in mind

Genesis + Child Theme + LetsEncrypt (minimal plugins)http://myblog.blog
Genesis + Child Theme ( lots of plugins)Now referring to point about possible conflicts, they may both use some common plugins but each might have different settings on config.php . e.g.
`define('WP_POST_REVISIONS',6);Alternatively, https://wpremote.com looks very impressive so I have signed up. I just wonder when they might start to charge for their service. No such thing as a free lunch right!
Yes, I have chosen my host which offered multi site , LetsEncrypt and SSH, plus a choice of Linux or Windows (per site). They have been helpful resolving incorrect NS entries when I removed a couple of sites from Microsoft.

westerdaledMemberAh not available in shared environments..... ;-(
"Im afraid this will not work.
Our shared hosting environment is automatised to only accept installations from Globalsign.
Use of 3rd party ssl certificates is not possible on the shared hosting environment. Solely on unmanaged services eg our VPS or dedicated servers."

That's an excellent tip. I have followed this up with my hosting company tho they might have a conflict of interest, given they are offering a range of certs from £60 - £180 . As I said quite a lot of expense for a non-transaction: site identity check.

Thanks for your reply. I too was away ( on a Welsh mountain) so only just got WIFI tonight
Yes, followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. Quite neat the way you have hooked into the Genesis framework using the Custom Genesis Loop.
Thanks again.

westerdaledMemberHi
I had another look at this tonight and I still can't figure where you would put the code from GIthub . Front-Page.php has additional stuff like handling the sidebars so not readily placed and I assume it isn't a site plugin ( have written a couple of those now) .. Hence, I am stuck ;-(
Daniel
westerdaledMemberHi Tonya
Thanks for a quick response, My current Theme is Metro Pro and yes, it does have front-page.php
I have download the code from Github and it is now open in Notepad++ ( and FIleZilla connected to my blog) . Do I replace front-page.php with it? Can you please explain You want to put this home template into your child theme. It will no longer use the Blog template."
what is the file name for this code.My settings - Reading -> Front Page displays

() A Static page <- here I can click on the link and can select any page inc the my orginal blank blog post page ( created with the original blog page template)
BTW pity this forum doesn't have the ability to upload screen dumps like MSDN , so much easier to explain stuff.

WAMP installs ok as luckily windows 10 no longer enables the IIS / W3C service by default. However, to get a fully supported system and have the pretty system tray icon to accurately reflect the online status of Apache; you need to install:multiple VC Runtime versions, (9 -14) both 32-bit and 64-bit. When I politely pointed out to the moderator/owner that this a barrier for increasing user adoption, he deleted my forum post! ;-(
XAMP is easier to use but clashes with Skype so I would need to make some config changes to get this to work
Looking at your suggestions. InstantWP.com looks good alternative to WAMP and MAMP. however ServerPress looks very impressive. I would feel so much more confident making changes to the my site if I could clone , test offline and subsequently push updates or back them out with just a few steps.
I have downloaded the free version and asked for a quote for Premium to see if the costs out weigh the time saving benefits.
Thanks again.

westerdaledMemberHi
I added this at the end of my site plugin but it seems oddly not to have any affect when I preview a post in my Metro Pro Theme. I have around 5 functions / filters in my Site Plugin and they all word perfectly, but not this. Am I hitting some limit somewhere? I have checked the shortcode reference and this function should work.
/* Delete text for Tags but replaced Filed Under with "Category" .Can also remove Category with just """ if this doesn't look good. www.basicWP.com */ add_filter( 'genesis_post_meta', 'dmp_post_meta_filter' ); function dmp_post_meta_filter($post_meta) { if (!is_page()) { $post_meta = '[post_categories sep=", " before="Category: "] [post_tags sep=", " before=""]'; return $post_meta; } }
westerdaledMemberThis is actually very easy ( even for php newbie like me! )
I started with http://wpspeak.com/customize-wordpress-tag-cloud-widget/
Now the blogger's styles arn't that bad but in the end I applied my meta-tag styles to tagcloud get the exact look I wanted.I couldn't add both filter criteria in the same function so I just get made the font size the same. If anybody Knows how to do this, or add the post tag totals. please update the comment.
westerdaledMemberHi
I have "sort of styled" the tags that appear under my post so they look like tag labels using a CSS3 trick - I still need to remove the "TAGGED WITH" text and them I am done. I noticed the tag cloud widget on my sidebar is truly awful to look at. I wondered if there is a "Genesis way" of making this pretty ; perhaps reusing my CSS classes such as
.entry-tags a{ margin-left:20px; padding:0 10px 0 12px; background: #999999; /* #0D4571; WSL Blue note this was #0089e0; */ color: white !important; /* was :#fff; */ text-decoration:none; -moz-border-radius-bottomright:4px; -webkit-border-bottom-right-radius:4px; border-bottom-right-radius:4px; -moz-border-radius-topright:4px; -webkit-border-top-right-radius:4px; border-top-right-radius:4px; }
Personally, I prefer creating simple plugins, I can enable / disable; rather than touching my Fuctions.php - the end result is exactly the same IMHO
This is close but I would rather reuse the styles I already have created than add similar ones via this plugin
I would need to hack the authors CSS
anyway to add my theme colours so a lot of duplication I suspect.I have added quite a lot of custom CSS to my theme so i have managed to go beyond the pain barrier 😉

I am have started to get this issue which is really annoying. So this is definitely nothing to do with WordPress and Genesis . I think the css load version parameter url as the version mapped the current theme; regardless of any changes I make to the style.css
westerdaledMemberHi
Thanks for your reply. I have found this a bit confusing. I had enabled breadcrumbs on Pages and Posts via Genesis -> Theme Settings. I can see these above the content. However, isn't the Yoast Breadcrumb settings about the breadcrumbs format related to search results? in which case do we need both configured; possibly with the snippet added to functions.php.
As an aside I did try moving the location of the Yoast Breadcrumb via he HTML 5 snippet supplied in resources -this just seem to mirror the breadcrumb in in the header and not remove the breadcrumb above the content.
