Hi Brad,
Here's an update. I emailed StudioPress Support and they sent me this code and said it could be styled:
.sidebar .simple-social-icons ul li {
}But obviously that isn't enough to get me anything. I didn't know what to add so I tried this - border-icon: 1px solid #000 but then realized that also wasn't enough info. I just wrote them back and asked for the image information... maybe I'll get it and if I do I'll let you know what it is.
Actually, I don't really understand the 'image' that shows up in the css...where it comes from and how it works....anyway, this is just more info for you.
Happy day,
Tom
tjdMemberMornin' Brad,
Sunniest Day in Tokyo in about 2 weeks. Nice to hear from you and thanx for checking those icons. I'm going to follow-up your recommendation re: Firebug. Seems like many folks like/use it so it's time I got my feet wet too.
Maybe I should ask Studio Press Support directly re: icons, but my past experience is they're not much on specifics. Anyway, if you come up with something let me know.
Have a good one...
Tom
tjdMemberHi Brad,
Nice to hear from you...How's things 'down-under'. Here's the site: tomjdolan.com I'm fine-tuning the site as I complete the last un-published Page and your advice is always welcome.
While you're commenting, I'll ask this: I've seen firebug mentioned a lot during my site designing and I wasn't sure if I can use it because with Genesis, we're not supposed to touch the core code. How do I determine what code I can adjust or add to?
Thanx for your interest Brad,
Tom
tjdMemberHi anitac,
Nice to hear from you again. I use Safari as my usual browser, mostly out of habit. I did download both FireFox & Chrome to test the appearance and functionality of my choices. Frankly, I don't see an issue with any of the 3 browsers. The slow-2-load issue is on my iPhone, and again it's only with the site Header Title, what I believe is the H1 title.
The site loads and opens pretty quickly. Every thing is there but not the Title text. Yesterday I used my studio stopwatch and according to it, the Title text takes over 3 seconds to arrive on site. I'd like to speed it up if possible. I thought about asking my web host to check it out. They have been pretty responsive but I have one unsolved issue with them and will probably relocate the site next January. Also,
the response from Dave suggested the time might be related to pulling the google font...I know zero about that possibility but it's ez to confirm which I'll do later today. So, once again,
Thanx for your comments and interest in my journey,
Tom
tjdMemberMornin' Dave,
Well another grey-n-rainy day in Tokyo, but your response brightened things up a bit. I never thought of the font as a potential issue, but it's worth checking out. The name of the font is Oswald which I didn't like at first, but grew to like it because the Caps are a bit taller then the usual arial, etc. That said, I did elect to set the rest of the site in arial.
I'm new at website design and as I'm targeting an international market, read that Asia. I thought that a generic font would most likely be readable on most computers. Well except for the nav bar and widget titles, all is arial.
I didn't post the site url as I've learned one lesson here: too much of a good thing is 'too much'. In some past posts I've provided a lot of info so the person that might answer my ??'s would see it as I see it... "it" being the problem. In most cases there's never a response and so brevity wins.
I'm still populating the Pages with info, in fact the most important Page is not yet on the nav bar, but please take a look: tomjdolan.com
My goal is to project friendly, trustworthy, reliable, capable... kinda like the Boy Scouts without the Campfire Marshmallows. Any feedback is well appreciated if you're moved to make a comment(s).
Thanx Dave,
Tom
tjdMemberHi Marc,
I love that plugin. So much so that I installed and uninstalled it twice. Got it configured exactly as I wanted...thought this is good. EZ to understand, nice looking, etc, But,
After installation, with no configuration, when I went to visit the site from the Dashboard, my site Header was corrupted...my words. The Header increased in height, the main title of one line became a 2-line title, and the nav bar below the Header doubled in height. Now,
this miraculously repaired itself when I logged out...but I couldn't take a chance. I don't know what the conflict was but I felt it was more then I could handle and I didn't trust it to work properly for my visitors. So I'm now with the 4th trial plugin which is ok but your choice would be my choice. Thanx for the input.
tjdMemberStill looking at the comments re: the newest W3TC upgrade. Continues to receive too many negative comments for my taste. Today did another speed test on pingdom.com. Tested @ all 3 locations. Tested with W3TC, with no cache plugin, & with Quick Cache newly installed(1st time).
Hands down winner: Quick Cache. ~a note/ no cache plugin was slightly slower than W3TC.
For my use, new site, lo traffic, Quick Cache is great.
tjdMemberMornin from Tokyo,
Dark grey &cold &rain. ugh! Anyway, as I only put this into the Post late last nite, I just visited it and it plays ok. I do have some concerns about the appearance of the Player. It's not intuitive 'looking' and I wonder if that's ok. I have no idea how to style it other then with the short codes provided by the developer...which all worked ok. That said, I'd like to change the Turquoise Text Color but don't know how...emailed late last nite to developer...waiting for return.
Also, just checked the operation on iPhone. Looks the same, sounds good, but, the Volume Slider is difficult to operate. Maybe too small.
So, you can find it at tomjdolan.com on the Reconstruction Post. Look at the bottom of the Post for goog1 and there you are. Let me know what you think about appearance & function. I attempted to install one of the more traditional Playlist Players. Didn't have any luck, but it was late.
tjdMemberBegan investigating MP3-jplayer tonight. Unusual look may confuse visitors but at least it works. Need to reconfigure the color scheme and so got off an email to plugin designer. We'll see if I hear back. But it works. Got a test on the bottom of the Test Post on my blog if you wanna see the Player. Now remember, I use single Players not Playlist Players.
If anyone visits, leave a comment there or here about your feelings re: the Player. Is it intuitive? Thanx,
tom tomjdolan.com
tjdMemberHi anitac,
I really like the Audio Player. I downloaded and configured it 100% to my liking. Even enjoy the animation of it. All that said, when I checked it on my iPhone, it wasn't there. In it's place was a large apology stating that I needed 'Flash' for the Player to work. But although there may be Flash plugins for the iPhone/iPad, I can't assume everyone has the plugin. And then there's the admission by Adobe that they'll stop supporting Flash. So,
Although I love the look of the audio player, I'm going to continue looking for an alternative. Next on my list is the MP3- jPlayer which you also mentioned. It's late nite in Tokyo and I think I'll wait till tomorrow to test both it and me.
Thanx.
tjdMemberHi Susan,
The issue has been resolved on purpose by accident. Your mention of the 'featured image' alerted me to it's existence. Afterwards, in an Upgrade to my Genesis Theme, I went thru the initial settings I made during the initial installation about 2 months ago. And there IT was! I had checked, for no good reason , the Featured Image box...not knowing what it did but thinking it 'felt' right. So, now being better educated, I unchecked it, saved and moved on.
Afterwards when looking at the results of the upgrade I saw, or rather didn't see the small image that had confused me. In fact I don't use, or haven't used images in my Posts, only on my Pages.... but that might change in the future. Nevertheless, Thank You for following up, and Yes the issue is, happily, resolved.
Tom
tjdMemberHello Again and thanx for your suggestions.
anitac/
The audio player that you suggested looks a little dated and although some say it currently works, i thought a more current player might stay in place longer, that is, I don't want to deal with this issue for awhile after i set it up. On the other hand,
the MP3-jplayer looks good. I actually bookmarked it about 2 days ago but haven't had a block of time to sit down with it. Probably tomorrow I will and I'll have some feedback afterwards.
JiveDig/
I lkie the looks of the player but my concerns are 2-fold. One is my very limited ability to fuss with code. i can handle most css, some php w/guidance, and a little html in the Dashboard. That said, i avoid tinkering with my files at my Hosts site. And this player looks like it's still in development and the coding required looks daunting to me.
Thanx to both of you for your time and suggestions. Tom
tjdMemberJiveDig, Thanx for the recommendation. I looked at it previously but the business limitations of the license don't fit my needs. It is nice looking though.
cehwitham, I also had considered the HTML jQuery Player. The problem for me was the appearance. Essentially it looks like it's perfect for Music/musicians...which I'm not. I'm into VoiceOver/narration.
My needs are 2-fold: individual players for different voice demo's on one Page, and on another Page, I'll put up individual short story recordings which I intend to sell thru a Store of some kind...yet to be decided. So I don't need the Album cover space or the song list below it. I like the appearance but not for my needs.
I have installed a PLayer called WP audio player, by Martin Laine. I've configured it and it's perfect except it doesn't work on iPhone/iPad. That's too bad because my new site is mobile responsive. So there it is.
Thanx to both of you.
tjdMemberHi Carrie,
Thanx for the quik response. It's after midnite here in Tokyo, and checking, for the last time, my email I was surprised to see your response.
Well, I originally moved the widget titles to the right to provide more visual separation between the Posts & the sidebar. I even narrowed the sidebar a bit. Originally I naively asked StudioPress Support for assistance and although their response was brief, they said there was no 'center setting', either right or left. I chose right. But,
Tonite I tested your advice. The titles do move left when that code is removed, but, the email box and the text don't shift left. So I moved the title right again and although the email box + text is still is a bit off, I can live with it until I can't.
Obviously I'm not too strong in the coding dept but I'm ok to take chances as long as I can avoid destruction...been at this for weeks.
BTW, I did copy/paste all of the above code into my css and then went about adjusting values one at a time and testing each change as I went. A manic experience. Nevertheless,
Thank you for you kind interest.

tjdMemberHello,
I happened upon this discussion by accident but it was my good luck. I'm in the middle of a site redesign, my 1st attempt, and I just haven't been able to do anything with my eNews Extended widget....never could figure how to get it to look like the screen shots I've seen.
Then I see this conversation and I realize I don't have any css code for it in the style sheet. So I copied and pasted the code, block-by-block into my css, testing as I went and hoping my site wasn't going to explode at a click of the mouse.
I'm pretty happy with the results but I can't seem to center the email box and the text within. I'm simply not savvy enuf to know what to put where.
Here's the site if anyone can advise how to adjust: tomjdolan.com
Thanx for your help
tjdMemberanitac,
Plugin is pretty neat. Provides an answer to a problem that didn't exist until I thought of it.
Thank you again. Tom
tjdMemberHi anitac,
I've just looked at your recommendation and it looks good. I'll download/install when I'm done here. Thanx so much.
tjdMemberSoZo, Mornin' from a brute but chilly Tokyo,
Thanx for the quik response and that's good news. I am in the midst of a site redux on Genesis/Child theme. My code limit is just ok on a good day and then only in the css. I don't know the procedure of preparing/coding an image for widget placement...and I don't xpect a tutorial here. That said, can point me in the right direction so I can move this project along.
Thanx, Tom
BTW, I checked your Portfolio and thought the sites you show looked good, especially I liked the Headers.
tjdMemberThis reply has been marked as private.tjdMemberHi anitac,
Well I'm happy for you to see the page and the site. Please keep in mind I'm only beginning to redo the pages so discount the content & design. I've spent most of my time learning Genesis, the Legacy theme, and a bit about css. I'm only familiar with html, but not schooled in any way. So,
If you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to consider it/them.
Thanx for your interest,
Tom
