    Yes. That worked. WP appears to have added the ability to skip cropping. That's a huge help to several of my clients migrating large graphics to newer versions of their themes.

    thanks for the info. I took care of the black line (wanted it out.)

    as far as the header image, I can't crop it vertically anymore. And like I said, it renders just fine on desktops/laptops, as well as the iPad. It's only the phones, that it looks like it's swimming in the header background.

    current image is

    is this the text in question? [my arrow]
    I use the Appearance > Editor in the dashboard

    body {
    background-color: #efefe9;
    color: #a5a5a3; <-------------------------------

    font-size: 16px;
    font-weight: 300;
    line-height: 1.625;

    I checked the plugins in questions, and even though the folders are there, they are empty.

    I've taken one so far, deleted the folder, than re--installed, and it uploaded just fine (it would not overwrite or install until I deleted the empty directory.)

    Sort of. I uploaded the "Lifestyle Pro" theme, which appears to be an updated version of the "Lifestyle" theme.
    However, it looks like I have to re-build the site, as the widgets are there, but are all in the "inactive" section.

    The bigger question are the plugins, which are listed in the directory, but not loaded into the theme.

    Via FTP.
    Changed the directory to "Plugins-old," although my guess was the theme was the problem. As soon as I changed the theme's filename as well, I was able to use the default theme and upgrade to WP 3.9

    I was able to make a fix, by disabling the plugins and the theme page, then updating WP and Genesis.
    Then I uploaded the newer version of "Lifestyle" theme/

    Of course now, none of the plugins are there, even though I renamed the plugins directory back to its original
    They are in the directory, but not listed in the dashboard.

    Do I have to re-install each and every one?

    No such luck. I changed the plugin folder to plugin-old.
    Still can't login to the wp-admin back end. It just says "404" and nothing else.
    I even closed and re-started my Firefox browser to make sure it wasn't cached

    Thanks for your reply. I'm not working with my hosting company, it's the clients. I keep asking them to update the WP to 3.9, and they give me a litany of reason why they can't (third party software, etc.)

    I will try your suggestion (rename plugin folder) and report back.

    If you haven't already, use the SEO plugin from Yoast.
    A friend who is a Google Analytics expert recommended it to me.
    It bumped my Alexa rank up about 30% after two weeks.

    They have an informative blog and newsletter.

    in that syntax you have ......add_image_size( 'home-featured', 280, 100, TRUE );

    which is width and which is height?

    Thanks,

    Thanks, that's such an easy thing to miss.  It should be in the tutorial (if it's not already)

    Assume I don't know much about coding.  In the tutorial it says to create CSS to display the social network icons.

    Where would I do that?
    Is that a new file?  What is it called?
    What directory would it go in?

    I had to go in via FTP and delete both the Lifestyle theme and the Genesis update.

    Then I had to upload the Genesis 1.9 via FTP, since nothing else worked.  But once doen, the site was fine.
