Accelerator is the new service through StudioPress, correct? I'm interested in it, haven't looked at it much yet.
PorterParticipantI'd argue it's actually quite easy to set up, especially if you're on shared hosting (there are numerous guides to follow, and the settings make perfect sense if you don't let them intimidate you).
Either way, the site loaded pretty fast for me (1.5 seconds or so), and most of that was waiting on the server initially. I see you can get a tiny of compression out of your images (9% reduction, according to Google Page Insights), but you'll see the most improvement from W3 Cache.
PorterParticipantThat's what I was curious about.
Given that information, all I can suggest is disabling your plugins. If that doesn't work, I'd ask for help from those who know the Dynamic theme. I've never used it, but I believe that's the one where you can easily make any design, from the dashboard? If so, I would assume they've done a lot of tweaking, which is causing our lack of understanding for this scenario.
PorterParticipantAh, missed that. I can't possibly imagine why that would happen - do you have a custom 404.php file in your directory? Perhaps that's messing it up? If not, it's definitely a plugin conflict, or something specific to your Dynamic theme.
PorterParticipantI figured it out, Yoast SEO was altering it.
"Taxonomy to show in breadcrumbs for:"
Just had to select "Category" from the dropdown on the "internal links" settings page.
PorterParticipantHere's what I'm using:
add_action( 'template_redirect', 'redirect_404_to_any_url' ); /** * @author Brad Dalton * @example http://wpsites.net/wordpress-tips/redirect-404-page-not-found-to-any-url/ * @copyright 2014 WP Sites */ function redirect_404_to_any_url() { if ( is_404() ) : wp_redirect( 'http://yoursite.com/the-page', 301 ); exit; endif; }
That'll let you specify the url to redirect to when getting a 404, and you can build that page as you please.
PorterParticipantPlease link us to the site, specifically any category page where this is taking place.
August 12, 2014 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Decrease padding or margin between widget title and element #118450PorterParticipantNo problem 🙂
Is your new spacing sufficient, or are you trying to get it even tighter? I noticed the title itself is taking up more space than it visually shows. If you hover over the margin / padding / content graph on the bottom of Chrome's inspect element tool, it shows the title as being nearly double the height it's using, which I don't know how to alter.

margin-bottom: 32px;
Change that to 0px; (or just remove that line) for the biggest decrease in space, and anything between 0 and 32 to adjust it compared to where it is now. That piece of css should appear near .widget, or similarly related classes.
August 12, 2014 at 10:11 am in reply to: Decrease padding or margin between widget title and element #118411PorterParticipantIt appears you're editing the site right now (that side bar piece is shown way below on the left side for me). If you return it to it's normal state, I can likely solve this for you.
PorterParticipantThe best way, IMO, is to simply open your functions.php file, and add the following:
//* Remove the footer. remove_action( 'genesis_footer', 'genesis_do_footer' );
Genesis uses hooks, and that would be the proper way to remove it.
If you'd like to alter that text, without a plugin (I recommend you only use a plugin when a simpler solution cannot be found), simply add this to your functions.php, and edit the text portion.
//* Customize the entire footer remove_action( 'genesis_footer', 'genesis_do_footer' ); add_action( 'genesis_footer', 'sp_custom_footer' ); function sp_custom_footer() { ?> <p>Your text here!</p> <?php }
PorterParticipantCan you elaborate on why this is? Why is setting a template any different than creating a directly file for page? I'm not a WordPress expert, but I feel like this is going against a lot of what I know about the WordPress core.
If I was to create a custom child theme based off of the Genesis Sample Theme, would I not do it the way I described?
PorterParticipantOne bit I missed, though I'm not 100% on how Genesis handles this.
There's actually no need to name it home.php. Naming a file home.php will overwrite any internal settings, and load that file instead, even over an index.php file. You could (and should, to my knowledge), be able to achieve the same thing by naming the file "template-home.php", and assinging the template manually within the WordPress dashboard. You can assign any page as your home page, so pick whatever "Home" page you come up with, assign it the proper template ("template-home.php"), and you should be good to go.
This will ensure you're not toying with the built in functionality of index.php / home.php as special file names, but achieve the same results.
Side note, I personally create a "templates" folder within my child theme, and store all template files in there, just for organization.
PorterParticipantTo my knowledge, that's the proper way to go about it. You create a template, assign it to your home page, and use a custom loop.
PorterParticipantFor your drop downs, open your style.css and do a search for (ctrl + f) "#a5a5a3", that's the color currently being used. When you find that color, you should see it in some css pertaining to sub-nav, or navigation related css. Simply swap out that color for the #3F3F3F that you prefer.
That same color appears to be what's being used in the body, so again, search for "#a5a5a3" find .body (or something very similar) and replace it with #3F3F3F.
The only bit I'm not 100% on is how to make the white stay as is, but be bold. I'm sure that's really simple css, but css is not my forte, in fact, I loath it haha.
PorterParticipantSo I found this pretty amazing tool, Font Friend. You add it as a bookmark, and when you click on it while on a page, you can select any Google font, which part of the css it effects (body, h1, etc), change the font wait, and more. I used that tool with a few tabs open, and am trying to decide between:
Lato (what I have now actually does look good)
Open Sans
MuliI've found that 300 font weight works best for all of these - is a lighter font weight for dark websites a thing? If anyone could visit the page I linked, try that tool with those 3 fonts, and let me know what they think, that would be greatly appreciated!
PorterParticipantThanks for the font suggestions, and information on line-height and padding. The Das Bierhaus page is actually from before my redesign, and everything there is done by shortcodes ultimate (plugin). The page I linked is the new direction I'm going in, though a wall of text like the actual location pages would have been better to showcase.
I'll try out the fonts you listed, and play with the line height to see what works best. As for the media queries and the menu, still designing that as we speak, but thanks for spotting it 🙂
PorterParticipantSo if I understand, I'm just adding .nav-primary to the already existing .site-inner and wrap media queries? I went ahead and did that, and it appears to be working great on a Kindle Fire HD. I'll test it on the nook color and apply it to the other media queries to see the effects.
PorterParticipantNot a problem! I primarily do game development for web (Flash, Unity), but I've been teaching myself the specifics of PHP / WordPress as of late. I too had a bit of trouble when dealing with arrays as a returned object, and didn't realize it was potentially specific to Genesis.
I'd love for someone experienced to clear that up, as it's confusing to at least a number of us.
PorterParticipantACF also has a decently active forum, have you tried posting there as well?
So if I'm understanding, you essentially can't access the attributes of your custom post type? You can go one level deep, but not two?
If so, have you tried echoing the first object, and the attributes separately? If so, what do you get?
