    Problem solved, I was using Genesis version 2.2 rather than 2.4.0. Updated it and solved all problems

    Also happened to me,

    No options in 'Default Layout' in Genesis theme settings!

    Please fix ASAP!

    Ah - nevermind it was a lot simpler than I thought.

    1. Open the post you want to change
    2. Open "screen options" at the top and tick "excerpt"
    3. You can now enter a manual post excerpt below the post

    I think I figured out. In the front-page.php file, I added the divs in before the widget area. I'm not sure if this is the 'correct' way to do it but I can't seem to figure out any other way, so any advice would be appreciated.
