September 23, 2014 at 9:07 pm in reply to: How to add a .png image in your header that overlaps header / body #125502Jason WeberMember
Thanks Craig! I'd actually like to place it in my Genesis header-right widget, so I'll see what I can achieve based on your suggestions.
September 19, 2014 at 2:31 am in reply to: Trying to get the primary nav above the header in Parallax Pro #125030Jason WeberMemberFor anybody running into a similar issue, I fixed my issue by doing this to the functions.php:
//* Reposition the primary navigation menu remove_action( 'genesis_after_header', 'genesis_do_nav'); //* add_action( 'genesis_before_content_sidebar_wrap', 'genesis_do_nav' ); add_action( 'genesis_before_header', 'genesis_do_nav' );
And then adjusting your CSS to this (or just inserting it in Custom CSS if you have that option -- recommended), as the native CSS has a margin-bottom of 60px:
.nav-primary { margin-bottom:0px!important; }
Jason WeberMemberI just went into the functions.php and commented out the lines where it said
remove_action ... genesis do nav, or whatever.
But now I can't get the mega menu plugin I inserted into it to not show up on the landing pages of the multiite ... hehe.
Back to the drawing board.
Jason WeberMemberHey jrricker.
This can be accomplished by adding the following to your style.css (or, preferably, if you have a plugin that allows for custom CSS):
.home-odd .wrap { background: rgb(40, 80, 229) transparent; /* whatever color you choose */ background: rgba(40, 80, 229, 0.4); /* change the opacity -- 0.3 would be lighter, 0.6 would be darker */ filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr=#2850e5, endColorstr=#2850e5) ; -ms-filter: “progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr=#2850e5, endColorstr=#2850e5)” ; }
This way, it's cross-browser compatible with a fallback for IE8 and below.
Hope this helps!
Jason WeberMemberThings seem to be corrected, Emilee, but you want to make sure the following files are updated:
- front-page.php
- functions.php
- style.css
- /js/parallax.js
- /lib/customize.php
- /lib/output.php
You can edit these files manually and remember what you've done, or if you have a plugin that allows for a custom CSS and custom functions in your child theme, that'd be preferable.
Most likely, you just copied and pasted and forgot to rename something to 6 or 7.
Let me know if you have any issues; I just did the same to my multisited-Parallax pro theme.
Jason WeberMemberThank you for that, Anita!
I had run across that post, but wasn't implementing it properly. Saving all of my already-coded widgets by storing them in the "inactive widgets" area and then renaming the theme and uploading it separately as a new theme (per your suggestion) did the trick!
I surely don't want to upset any at Genesis, however. So if anybody notes that it's not ethical, I'll revert to the old way with no problem.
Thank you for taking the time to respond, Anita!
Jason WeberMemberOops --- missed that option.
Thanks again Tonya!
Jason WeberMemberPerfect, Tonya! (sorry for the misspelling earlier)
I just put that snippet into my Custom CSS ... BAM!
That's precisely the effect I've been trying to achieve all day.
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me with this!
Jason WeberMemberPerfect ... thanks Tonya!
I just replaced replaced nav.nav-header with .site-header, and that accomplished what I wanted to do ... which was not merely hide the menu, but hide the entire header.
Hey Tony .... Not to be a pest, but although this kinda worked, where the header was should be my extended background image. For some reason, however, the area where the header was is now white:

I'm sure this is some type of custom CSS fix, but I can't seem to find the right element or selector ... or maybe it's a matter of giving the background images a higher z-index.
Do you know how I could accomplish extending that background image all the way to the top upon page load?
Thanks!
Jason WeberMemberThanks Alanna. I indeed found a solution, combined with a personal hack, that made the native menu sticky. I'd post the solution in here, but It's not 100% safe and full-proof tested. It's worked on 2 of my domains so far, however.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, and if you'd ever like the solution I used, let me know!
Jason WeberMemberHey Marc, wow .. thanks for that information and link! I'm going to install/activate it right now and see if I can play around with it! Free is always an added bonus, too ... hehe
Jason WeberMemberHi ... thanks Summer, sdBroker ...
I guess I'll wait for the announcement of Denali. I can say with certitude that there are certain drawbacks of a one-page design from an SEO perspective, but I'd like to try one out.
Coincidentally, I stumbled across a StudioPress one-page theme: http://my.studiopress.com/themes/modern-portfolio/ ...
Unfortunately, it doesn't behave like a one page theme on the demo, and there's little documentation about it (does it have a page builder? Shortcodes?) .... so I suppose I'll wait for Denali.
Is there a way to get a notification when Denali is released?
Jason WeberMemberYes, I know they're both owned by EIG ... I'll shoot you an e-mail although I think my plugins are pretty solid.
Jason WeberMemberAbsolutely, Andrea, and thanks. It's pretty loaded with plugins, so I'm working on getting the page load times down as best as possible. I'm up to 94% / 89% in gtmetrix on my homepage.
Once I'm settled in on a taxonomy, then I'll start SEO'ing the site, which is what I'm trained in.
The hosting has been an issue. HostGator just didn't jive well. I was deciding between BlueHost and DreamHost. DreamHost says they have DreamPress, which is optimized for WordPress.
BlueHost had opcode APC caching and things like that. I went with BlueHost for the time being, but I'm easily swayed and purchase on a whim, so I'm always apt to switch.
But I LOVE the default look of Genesis/Dynamik and general layout ... and of course Dynamik gives you so many options to do so many things. I really wanna learn more about these templates, labels, and conditionals, but haven't had time to learn what they're all about yet.
Jason WeberMemberThanks Andrea. I know that on Facebook, you were one of the people who convinced me to go with Genesis / Dynamik-Gen .... I'm http://www.facebook.com/jasonpaulweber ....
Jason WeberMemberyes ... jasonpaulweber @ gmail dot com is fine ...
Jason WeberMemberI tried to email [email protected] from two separate email addresses, twice each, Rob, and they keep getting bounced back (returned / unknown sender) thing:

Jason WeberMemberRob, I apologize for mistakenly calling you Bruce; it happens when you're a WordPress geek with no life who's been up for 36 straight hours figuring these things out ... hehe ... but Rob, your e-mail was bounced back ... [email protected] didn't work. Was that a typo?
Susan, for sake of veracity, that's actually what I did .... I have 49 plugins, and I installed them in groups of 10 at a time 🙂
By the way, being new to Genesis and the forums, why am I unable to add a profile picture?
Jason WeberMemberPerfect ... now it finally looks like the WP Admin interface I'm used to. I had a couple stale plugins that I had no use for, so I'm sure one of them was the culprit.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, Bruce, because as unintelligent as I am, I'd have never thought that a plugin conflict was causing that!
Jason WeberMemberYep -- I just deactivated my plugins, and now the widget areas are showing ... so surely there was a plugin conflict. Now comes the painfully slow process of reactivating one by one ... hehe
