@glennmc if you use a plugin like Google Analytics by Yoast they make the implementation of some Analytics features much easier. If you are just trying to set up a basic tracking code and don't have plans to do more advanced tracking or look at more in depth or specific data, then you could probably get away using the header script.
For example with Yoast's plugin, with the click of a checkbox, you can turn all downloads into 'events' in Google Analytics. This is WAY faster than setting this up manually. Or you can opt to have them load as pageviews. There are other one-click checkboxes you can employ with the Yoast plugin. But these are really only if you are using Google Analytics for serious tracking, which Google Analytics doesn't do out of the box in all instances.
If you want to use Google Tag Manager you either need a plugin specifically that can handle that, or you need to input it manually in the theme functions.php file (search this forum, it's in here somewhere). Google Analytics by Yoast, as of the last time I checked, doesn't support Google Tag Manager.
Google Tag Manager's code has to go after the opening body tag. Google Analytics script doesn't.

March 31, 2016 at 11:56 pm in reply to: Using enqueue script for Google Analytics autotrack.js #182623joycegraceParticipantHi Thanks for replying, but I explained in my original post why the theme settings won't work for this particular case. I really need this particular script to go in functions.php
It doesn't have to load before or after the analytics main script, it just needs to load on the site, on every page.

joycegraceParticipantWhere would we define the URL for the thumbnail to use as the default?
Find me at Joyce Grace (http://www.joycegrace.ca)
joycegraceParticipantThat code snippet doesn't work for me. I'm baffled as to why. Does anyone know how I can just add a default featured image? Doesn't have to depend on the author or category.

joycegraceParticipantIf you added a footer.php to a child theme folder, would it hold up in Genesis, or would it confuse things? I need to do this to create a network wide footer on a multisite project and not sure if it can be done with the functions file (I'm in my preliminary research stages - any advice would help).

December 17, 2013 at 1:56 am in reply to: Code snippet to remove nav on home page only, not inside pages #79695joycegraceParticipantjoycegraceParticipantI can't really see what you're talking about but my guess is that you might want to install widget logic plugin and then where you don't want a widget to appear on the home page, use !is_home() in the widget field where it says "widget logic"
Then it won't show on the home page but will show on all the other pages.

joycegraceParticipantIt's always going to take the primary sidebar if you are using content-sidebar or sidebar-content.
If I were you, honestly, the simplest solution would be to turn the secondary sidebar into the 290 px wide one and the primary sidebar into the 300 px one.
Then when you use Genesis Simple Sidebars on an inside page, you will get the primary sidebar to be 290, which it will use automatically.
Otherwise you have to change a lot of other stuff....
You could probably deal with this with CSS only, making your home page sidebars different widths than on inside pages.
For example, if the home class is .home then you would do something like
.home .content-sidebar-sidebar (or whatever the layout or classes and IDs are called)
That will control the sizing on the home page only.
Then let the rest of the site use the 290 / 300 px sizes.

joycegraceParticipantthat is super awesome advice, thanks David! I'm so glad to hear about the Genesis support included.
I actually don't mind paying for things like the ACF or Types extras if they will make my life easier and especially if they will make the client's life easier in the back end.
For a coding level, would you say that Pods requires knowledge of PHP syntax, or do they make it pretty clear what their own 'logic' is to setting up things using their code, so that someone who knows HTML and basic WordPress stuff would be able to figure it out? If you have an opinion on this I'd love to hear it, especially as it relates to Types or ACF.
Thanks again!

June 29, 2013 at 2:11 am in reply to: Make images in Genesis Responsive Slider links that are clickable #48346joycegraceParticipantJust in case it helps anyone else, the Genesis Responsive Slider images do link to the post or page you link them to, it was a CSS problem on my side with a height something or rather. Sorry for the confusion!

joycegraceParticipantHi Faisal,
You wouldn't paste code in this case, you would be adjusting code that is already there. Go to your child theme folder, open up style.css and search for "wrap" if that's what you want to change. But keep in mind that if you change this width it will likely affect other things on your site, you will want to keep back up copies of your files so you can revert to an older version of your CSS file without having to start from scratch.
the best way to learn is to keep trying and tweaking, making mistakes, fixing them, and trying again.
Also it's best to first learn how to use Inspect Element in your browser or to use Firebug for Firefox (my preference, it is a plugin extension for Firefox browser).

June 26, 2013 at 9:58 pm in reply to: Make images in Genesis Responsive Slider links that are clickable #47958joycegraceParticipantAhhhh....I really don't want to switch sliders now because we've customized the css already. Does anyone know a hack to get the images to be clickable? The setting should work, it says "images" for making it clickable or non clickable 🙁

June 26, 2013 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Make images in Genesis Responsive Slider links that are clickable #47858joycegraceParticipantBut then I won't have the text box at the bottom and I would lose out on responsive, wouldn't I? 🙁

joycegraceParticipantYou probably need to set up your site using the "Get started" instructions in the my.studiopress.com area
Your home page is using blog posts.
It would help if your replies were not private so others looking for the same help can read the solutions.

joycegraceParticipantOk I found something thanks to Brad here: http://www.studiopress.community/topic/excluding-category-from-grid-loop/ - this solution was originally give to exclude categories from the home page, see his post there to learn more about that
Try this, but change your category ID accordingly:
/** Home page display one category only */
add_action( 'pre_get_posts', 'exclude_category_posts_home' );
function exclude_category_posts_home( $query ) {
if( $query->is_main_query() && $query->is_home() ) {
$query->set( 'cat', '4' );
}}
Put this in the functions.php file

joycegraceParticipantI also am looking for a way to display only one category on a Genesis home page, using the Balance theme. Let me know if you find out how to do this
Find me at Joyce Grace (http://www.joycegrace.ca)
joycegraceParticipantHello, I tried to do this and ran into two problems:
I commented out the code as you suggested so my home.php had only the code in the example you gave as what you would end up with if you deleted the part you mentioned.
That removed all text from the home page. Understandable, since now we want a static page, not posts there.
I went into Settings > Reading and selected to have my Front Page display a page - but that takes away the banner at the top of Balance theme and shows an inside page without the breadcrumbs - so it's like a totally new set up.
Can you help clarify what to do next after removing the code you suggested?
