To answer my own question, I put the code from https://www.role-editor.com/allow-access-appearance-menu-items/ in my functions file.

Is this an appropriate solution or should it go elsewhere?

I am open to all suggestions.

Thank you for the reply with the code.

It wasn't quite enough but I managed to work it out from what you gave me.

For anyone else who is interested, the first two code segments need a vertical alignment for the buttons like top: 175px;
