It looks like you got the centering thing to work. On the extra white space, I noticed that the header id has a height of 245px while your image is 224px, maybe that's it?
May 1, 2013 at 5:33 pm in reply to: How to make Genesis theme compatible with Internet Explorer #38844essaysnarkParticipantGenesis is at 1.9.2 right now and yes, you should upgrade, not just due to site performance and layout issues but also because the upgrades often fix security issues that are discovered. WP core and plugins should also be kept up to date.
That being said, you need to be careful because yes, there can be glitches whenever you do an upgrade. Always take a backup of your site before upgrading and make sure you know how to restore the backup if something goes wrong. Then, if you have multiple pieces to upgrade at once, do them one by one, and test in between each. That way, if something gets screwy, you know which piece it was and you're in a better position to restore functionality.
The issue with Adsense may not be due to Genesis, it might be from a plugin or whatever other method you're using to insert the ads. So you'll need to take the issues one at a time, probably.
essaysnarkParticipantI'm totally dodging your actual question here, but possibly this plugin could do what you need?
essaysnarkParticipantHi Faith --
Here's what it says in the Genesis for Beginners guide:
Number of Posts to Offset – this is useful when you have one or more posts
displayed in full on the main portion of your page – simply offset by the number
of posts in the main area, and only distinct content will show in the widget.Say your home page is already showing the most recent 5 posts on your blog, and you want to have the Featured Posts widget display a list of 10 - but you don't want the posts in the sidebar widget to be duplicates of the ones that are already being displayed. In that case, on the Featured Posts widget you'd set the first value of Number of Posts to Show to 10, and then the offset to 5.
I had to actually put it in place on my sidebar and play with the options to see exactly what it was doing. The reason for the Offset is so that your widget doesn't list posts that are already being displayed in the main section of the site.
Hope that makes sense!
April 26, 2013 at 4:16 pm in reply to: Need help ASAP. Need to not collect author and ip from comments. #37963essaysnarkParticipantWe're using a free plugin called Comment Emailer http://wordpress.gordonfrench.com/comment-emailer/ to suppress the IP address from going into the comment alerts. Not sure if there's any way to (easily) stop WordPress from collecting the IP addresses in the first place.
essaysnarkParticipantWe've been using Premise for a year and despite some frustrations along the way we're very happy with it.
If your needs are simple, a free plugin called Paid Memberships Pro is also very good but it's limited; each member can only be assigned to one level at a time.
essaysnarkParticipantI think Tim was trying to explain the logic behind the practice of landing pages not having menus or other links. The bit you quoted needs to be considered in context of the first sentence of the paragraph. He didn't mean to direct that at YOU (podgor); he was saying, "if site owners do this..." The way I read it, he actually has the same opinion as you do about landing pages with no links.
essaysnarkParticipantJust realized that filter is sidebar-content-sidebar. If you want content-sidebar (or some other variation) then check out Brian Gardner's reference page here.
essaysnarkParticipantWe're not using AgentPress so not sure if this is what you need but it should be pretty simple. Do you have a home.php file? If so you can put a Genesis filter in there - something like this:
// Force Sidebar-Content Layout add_filter( 'genesis_pre_get_option_site_layout', '__genesis_return_sidebar_content_sidebar' );
That way, you can set up your entire site to have one default layout using the Genesis -> Theme Settings options, and then have a different layout on the home page only.
Theoretically the hooks for your Featured Listing could also go in home.php but maybe AgentPress has a specific way to manage it separately.
Hope this helps!
essaysnarkParticipantNot certain this is what you're after, but here you go:
// Force a link anywhere the post excerpt is displayed. function excerpt_read_more_link($output) { global $post; return $output . '<a href="'. get_permalink($post->ID) . '"> Learn More...</a>'; } add_filter('the_excerpt', 'excerpt_read_more_link');
If that's not it, then the codex may help: http://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_the_Read_More
essaysnarkParticipantYou could do a conditional check on it - something like
if(!current_user_can('administrator') { remove_theme_support( 'genesis-admin-menu' ); }
essaysnarkParticipantOne way to approach it is to identify what type of content and for what purpose. That site mostly seems like brochureware (no offense to the site, it's beautiful! but it's not "doing" much). If your friend will be writing regular blog posts and trying to build an audience of people returning regularly, then that's one purpose; if she wants something to showcase her art and will update it infrequently, that's a different need. If there's an ecommerce element.... etc. The way we figured out which theme to go with was to first identify what we wanted the site to be/do and then we looked at the way the different themes were laid out - some emphasize different things than others based on how their default setup works.
Hope that helps!
essaysnarkParticipantWhat Brad is referring to is subscribing to a site's RSS feed, which is a great way to distribute your content. When they sign up, your subscribers can access the content you publish as WordPress posts without ever coming back to your site - each post will be sent to them via email/through the RSS feed system. Implementing a sign-up box for these is as simple as putting the widget into one of your sidebars, which then shows the site visitor a field that they can type in their email address and hit Enter and it walks them through the sign-up process.
Or, are you talking about letting someone become a member on your website so that they can access special content after signing in? If so, then you have a lot of options, and we'd need more info on your requirements before making suggestions. The big question is, are you going to charge for access? Or do you just want to know who's viewing your content by having them sign up for an account before displaying it to them? Lots of ways to go and how it's implemented is very much up to you.
essaysnarkParticipantThe code that TWF posted got miffed in the editor; let's see if this works better:
/** Customize the read more link */ add_filter( 'get_the_content_more_link', 'custom_read_more_link' ); function custom_read_more_link() { return '... <a class="more-link" href="' . get_permalink() . '">[Continue Reading]</a>'; }
This code goes in your functions.php or a plugin (if you're not familiar with modifying WordPress in this way, then be VERY careful - you can inadvertently take your site down with a simple mistake; make sure you save a copy of functions.php on your computer first, so you can restore it if needed, and have your FTP site access credentials at the ready so you can transfer that original file up to the site if something goes wrong).
essaysnarkParticipantHere's what I did to modify how my CPTs are being displayed:
1) I copied the file single.php from the Genesis core directory, named it single-[cptname].php, and put it in my child theme directory.
2) To make it look more like a page than a post, I just removed the post_info stuff:// Remove the post info function remove_action( 'genesis_before_post_content', 'genesis_post_info' );
That's all I've got in the body of the file, and then the standard genesis(); at the bottom. If you want to change the layout so that it's got a different sidebar, you can use the Genesis filters.
Hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction!
essaysnarkParticipantNot sure if this is it, but in some JS code in your footer, the slash characters are escaped, which doesn't look right to me - e.g.,
WPCOM_sharing_counts = {"http:\/\/onlytherealest.com\/daft-punk-ft-pharrell-nile-rodgers-get-lucky-preview-video\/":8360
I'm just guessing if that's it.
The other step to try is disable your other plugins and then try again - it could be a conflict (JetPack is one that seems a little suspicious).
I'm totally no expert, but those are where I'd start looking.
ETA: By "suspicious" re JetPack, I just mean based on its proximity to the JS with those funky URLs, and also because I've had a plugin conflict with JetPack before that caused me to remove it - obviously it's a good plugin from a reputable company!
essaysnarkParticipantShannon, it sounds like you've got a lot of experience with tech stuff, and a setup that works for you, which is awesome. We don't host with Bill but we are with another dedicated WP hosting company, and so just wanted to mention that we see a LOT of value - for example, with this recent brute-force WP login attack that's going around, we're not even worried since we know that our hosting company has our back. We still have complete control, in terms of access to the server and site setup, but we've got someone else managing the pesky details of security and backups, which is definitely a relief. When Bill was trying to diagnose your problem and laying out the possibilities with CloudFlare etc., he was just in debug mode and trying to throw out potential issues when he couldn't even see the WP install; he didn't come across to me as trying to sell you on anything in particular (in fact, it took me a bit of sleuthing to even find his site, to see that $20 figure you mentioned! he wasn't pushing you towards anything, I don't think, just commenting on how far he'd be able to try and help, at least that's how I took it).
Anyway, it's great that you found the problem, and also great that it was such a simple one, and just wanted to mention that this thread was helpful in providing a little education to me along the way! Thanks to Bill and Wendy, and to you for posting the original issue. 🙂
essaysnarkParticipantYou said you placed the code in "several different spots" - where, exactly, did you do so? Did you try the Genesis -> Theme Settings -> Footer Scripts section (very bottom of page)?
essaysnarkParticipantScratch that; moot point. The pre_get_posts() hook won't work in an archives.php template page, which Bill points out on his tutorial.
essaysnarkParticipantJust in case anyone follows along behind, the code above seems to have gotten clobbered by the editor. Hopefully this works better:
<?php /** * Template Name: Archive * Props http://www.billerickson.net/customize-the-wordpress-query/ **/ add_action( 'pre_get_posts', 'child_archive_display' ); function child_archive_display( $query ) { $query->set( 'order', 'asc' ); $query->set( 'orderby', 'title' ); } remove_action( 'genesis_post_content', 'genesis_do_post_content' ); genesis();
