Problem solved. I changed my default image size to 680x290 in the 'content archives' (customize menu), as required by the theme. I changed it yesterday not realizing it would behave this way. Now I know.
I received a message from "healthagil" wanting more info, but I don't see the response in this thread.
If you are this person, contact me directly and I can send you the original email from Studiopress, containing the solution and photos. It's easier to just forward you the info. When I have a little more time I'll update it here.

Yes, I have a workaround. It's a Gutenberg bug which is apparently on the list of things to fix.
My resolution is :
1 . Select "excerpt" in the sidebar widget
2. Add an excerpt in the Gutenberg post itself. There is an entry for that once a post has been converted from the classic-editor to the Gutenberg editor.This works for me. Initially, I had to do this for all of the sidebar posts on my homepage but now that it's done, it's easy to continue to use this method going forward.

I've used this theme for 5 years and I've never seen this happen. Really, this is normal?

No. I'm not a coder.
I want it to show on the image in the post, just not in the excerpt in the sidebar.
Not sure if that would solve the problem, even if I knew how to do it. The caption on the image should not be read as part of the main article.

I've also read that you can have the latest post date show by adding this code (below) to simple edits, 'entry meta (above content)'

Do you know where the image quality setting is for all of the theme images? Is there a global setting to make all images 100%?
