Thanks for the insights, Savvyjackie.
I'm uncertain who the "developer" for the NewsPro theme is. I thought it was the product of the SP "team".
There's still a few policy / procedural / status questions I asked that I'd like to see answered from on high, assuming the questions aren't a bit more clueless than I can appreciate due to my cluelessness.
Guess I'll find out shortly. I don't mean to waste anyone's time with pointless questions. Thanks for your time, Jackie.

I customarily use Firefox. I loaded Internet Explorer and Chrome to rule out browser related issues. Got the same result in all browers.
I downloaded the 2014 theme. I maintained a copy of the 2012 theme in the existing install "as a back-up". I alternated between News Pro -> 2014 -> 2012 and got the SAME result. Ergo my problem was beginning to look unrelated . . cough . . cough . . to Genesis. Mea culpa! Mea culpa! Forgive me for thinking there could be ANYTHING less than perfect with Genesis and the News Pro theme. (P.S. Is the News Pro theme going to be updated or put out ot pasture?)
FWIW, BEFORE doing all the above I ran through all the reported / proposed solutions, set forth here, to no avail: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-white-text-and-missing-buttons-in-wordpress-visual-editor/
As a last resort I deleted the tinymce folder from wp-includes/js/tinymce, downloaded a fresh copy of WP 4.0, extracted all folders and uploaded a fresh copy of ONLY the tinymce folder, refreshed the "New Post" page and . . Voila! The visual editor is now working.
Amen. So may it continue to work.

I deactivated all plugins (I don’t use many) and reloaded the editor. No change.
I'm hoping for a more granular solution than uploading all WP files - though I'll go that route if need be.
FWIW, I just upgraded to WordPress 4.0 on a Thesis 1.85 framework site - a framework I'm doing my best to part ways with - but on that site the Visual Editor is working fine. My conclusion, therefore, is that this isn't a server issue. I may be wrong but I suspect the issue resides in the Genesis framework. Wiser minds will disabuse me of this quickly . . or advise of an easy fix . . I hope.
