I am using Metro style on http://www.karnataka.com/

Jetpack had a nice utility for Popular Posts but Jetpack adds too much page weight. I had to uninstall it.

Currently using http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/popularity-posts-widget/ for Popular Posts but it is not as classy as Jetpack popular widget. This shows the big thumbnail, jetpack was showing the small gravtar shape/size icon for each post

Any suggestions what can be used for displaying Popular posts?

Have you considered pulling out the required code from Jetpack and putting it into your own plugin file? Alternatively turn everything else in Jetpack off so it's not adding so much bloat.

I've used the plugin below before but I now see it's being discontinued. Probably ok to use still just wont be developed further.
