    I recently had a situation where I was using a back level version of the Magazine Pro child theme. I needed to upgrade to the latest version of the theme.

    But I didn't know the right/best way to upgrade a Genesis Child Theme. I did the only thing I new how to do, which was to change my site to another theme (I used Genesis Sample), then delete the back level theme and upload the current level of the theme. Then I switched the site back.

    I did not have any file customizations on the old theme, so the way I did it was ok. But I'm curious what would have been the right/best way to do it, especially if I _had_ made some customizations by modifying the files.

    Is it possible to make a child theme of a genesis child theme where my file-based customizations could be made? Would that help in upgrading the genesis child theme in the future?

    I'm just curious what the best practices are.

    Child themes rarely if ever need updating. If you do decide to update a child theme, if you have no customizations, just FTP the new theme to copy it over the over the old. Most customizations will be in functions.php and style.css. If you have customizations, you would have to compare the old to the new and copy the customizations from the old to the new.

    You're not supposed to upgrade child themes.

    All code for things like security is in the framework, not the child theme. Any updates we do to child themes are minor and not expected to be rolled back to customized themes.

    (minor as in things like css updates, spacing etc... nothing you would be required to update)
