    Basically what the title says. I love everything about Essence except the header and top nav, and would much prefer utilizing the top nav layout from Gallery Pro. I know this would probably involve creating a child theme and heavily customizing, but I'm wondering if anyone could help give me some direction on achieving?

    They are two completely different themes, by two completely different designers. The developers of Gallery Pro do not code their themes like the StudioPress themes, so you're going to have a bit of a challenge on your hands. I'd say use Essence and maybe create a new home page with blocks.
